buying a diesel
buying a diesel
Hi guys, am currently lookin at buying a gu patrol. I would like to have somewhere around 150-160kw at the wheels, would i be better off to save the save and buy a n/a diesel then have all the gear put on to it or should i buy a turbo one then have it up graded?? how much would i be lookin at to do this

Factory turbo diesels have better internals, plus boost compensator - so those two things alone are worth a few grand. Whether the original vehicle costing reflects this is another thing.
With a factory TD42T, you would still have to upgrade the turbo anyway to get that sort of power, whereas an N/A setup would allow you to pick your own manifold and turbo straight off.
Your old parts off a factory turbo could be resold for about $1500, which could allow the purchase of a nice Garrett BB turbo.
I'm assuming you're looking at purchasing either one or the other?
Might pay to give your local diesel specialist (performance) a call and ask them. They might have some handy advice for you!

well the end result im loooking for is 150-160rwkw, but im wanting some advice on how to get there, i figured i would be replacing most things on a factory turbo to get there thats why i was lookin at a n/d diesel as an option because of the cheaper purchase price, but didnt no if this was a good option or not. i no i could get the power from a v8 turbo a petrol 6 etc but i dont want a turbo petrol, and dont really want to do the conversion thing again, which i would end up with a petrol v8 as the chev diesel doesnt make the power i am wanting. a duramax would be nice but i think that is not a realistic option for me

said it was only just a matter of getting some pump work done, and then a good sized BB Garret, to hit the 150KW stage, however i may be wrong around this.
However a mate has had a lot of pump work done, and a big turbo attached to the side of a TD42 and he was only cracking 110kws at the wheels. I'll ask him and get back to this thread
I'd call up some of the local shops to see what they say about it...... could save you some time and cash in the long run,,,

Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
f your looking for a 4.2 you probably would be better off getting an n/a.. can pick some gq's up for only 5000 bux where as a gu would probably fetch 30k..
how ever they will be worn and probably need a rebuild.. if you can do the build might work out pretty cheap other wise get a crate motor from nissan for 5700 drop it in and turbo it.. dont expect it to last 700,000 kms though..
