hey guys just bought a 95 coilcab gq patrol ute with a 6.2 chev diesel in it. UNSEEN! price was right so im not fuss'd either way. spoke to the seller he says everything is in really good condition car motor etc. says motor glows up n starts no worries. will be heading down south to pick this ute up next week so im just quizing u guys and pickin your brains to see if you's can help me out with anything i should look for? more so particular stuff with the conversion are these motors known to have certain leaks noises etc? any help or info is greatly apreciated!!
why?? for the simple reason it was bought off a dealer and if i can find anything wrong with it or perhaps something that doesnt look right i can ask the seller/dealer about it and perhaps sumthing can be rectified about whatever the concern is. purely for example reasons lets say if these motors were prone to having a loose head and signs were oil leacking from a back corner of the head i could have the seller/dealer possibly tighten it up in his work shop.

dunno, as far as i knew, these motors were pretty good, and very robust.....
Only think i would be doing is
1) Checking all the oils in motor, box's and rear diff to make sure they are all topped up, and then
2) Getting it home and changing all the oils and filters
just piece of mind really
Hopefully someone with some more in-site will offer some more advise

thanx for ur reply mate the oil levels in everything will be checkd naturally cant trust anyones word to weather theyve been done or not. ive had nothing to do with any other sort of motor in a patrol other then a 4.2 diesel or zd30 so the quesion was asked just to see if there should be anything to be aware of. in my opinion i got it really cheap. so if theres anything prone to these engines it would be good to kno before i drive it out of the car yard.
There's a place in Perth called Brunswick diesels who do conversions with chev diesels (but you shouldn't have to hear that from someone in NZ) so it's obviously a promising thing.

1991 GQ TD42 Safari, 5spd, 4" Lift, 35" shovels, Locked & Loaded.
everyone seems to like these chevy diesesls, but i thinh they're crap.
Brunswick diesels are some of the dodgiest operators around.
I've got 2 mates who both spent over $20,000 on 6.5's and both cry themselves to sleep at night. Yes, they have head issues, including the 6.5, 2nd pair of heads for Dave and 3rd set for Robby ( the last pair stung him for $5,000)
When Brunswick are approached they try to squirm out of it all.
Rob also had to replace a leaking water pump, fair enough, but it turned out all the wrong thread bolts had been used right through the front of the motor including timing cover and all ancillary's, and everyone of them snapped when tryed to remove. I don't know what they're doing there when they assemble their motors.
I forget all the problems they've had, but it seems like every couple of months either of them is making the 4oo km return trip down there to get something sorted out, usually at there expense.
I also remember chatting to an old bloke who was stranded in Exmouth a few years back, he was absoulutly fuming, and cursing Brunswick for saying they fixed "whatever" and clearly did'nt.
And on top of all that, my mildly worked TD42T leaves them both for dead, even when towing Robby's 24ft sharkcat.
Think about the fact that a 6.5 chev has a 1/3 larger capacity than a TD42 yet weighs a bit less. it suggests to me how lightly the block and heads are cast.
I think the 6.2 had fewer studs securing the heads and were more prone to head problems.
Stick to japanese and leave the yank crap well alone.

i was down to 3rd gear and working hard in his 75 series towing the cat home from Lancelin once, yet on a trip to S-bend with my patrol, i managed to hold 4th gear ( though still working hard ) and the hills were a bit bigger.
My other mate has his in a 47 series with 75 series gearbox and if we are both unloaded going up greenmount hill, i can pull away from him.

2. In photobucket click on the "direct link" and it'll show "copied" (Temporarily)
3. Now it's easier to have 2 tabs set up, 1 for outers and 1 for photobucket
4. On outers make sure you have their "img" in front and behind each shot if you do this they'll come up as mine do. Just press enter between each 2 shots you put up otherwise they'll keep going across the page!

20k u say i guess thats wat the conversion costs alone. if i told yas what i paid for this yous would all be hunting me down with pitch forks so before i boust about it ill see if it gets me home first lol

thats the one jes. which is now residing in my front yard drove it all the way home didnt miss a beat only thing i could fault was a dicky radiator hose and a dirty radiator didnt have any tools so i just kept topping it up and drove it on home, am very happy with it.
