hi all, for a friend i have had to come to the dark side of the forum, the toyota section, i am normaly in the nissan section as i have a patrol.
but anyway, here is the G.O.
my mate has a 91 2.8D LN106R hilux single cab uterus. and the arm from the power steering box to the draglink (im prety sure its called the pitman arm) has broken at a ball joint, now i'l assume that you know what i am talikng about.
the question is, what can he do to fix it? aparantly wreckers dont like to seperate the arm from the box, and he dosent realy want a new box, or to reco it, as its working fine; well it was. so, if anybody can help me, please do as we are going on a run to the condamine gorge.
cheers all

You're kidding right?
Buy a new pitman arm and chuck it on! Or pay someone to do it.
Sometimes theyre a prick to get off but because its already rooted, id just cut it almost off with a grinder and then give it a tap with a hammer.

Indeed, hitting them at the same time with 2 hammers, will shock them loose, although a pitman arm is a pain to get off, how did he break that, pitman arms should be unbreakable.... You should snap the draglink or tie rod ends before that

i dont think he broke the actual arm, im prety sure from what he told me, that he broke the shaft from the balljoint, to the pitman arm, so i think the arm is still ntact, but as yamaha suggestes, im prety sure he brought that one off ebay. whats involved in putting the new one on? is it easy to DIY, or best left to the pros?

undo the nut and tap it to see if it will come off. mine was easy, but a few options are mentioned above for stuborn ones.
Chuck a wanted ad on the forum for a shitter complete box and take the arm off it if you want to avoid ebay liabilities.
second hand boxs can be had for about $50 if they are only average or the person wants to clean up a bit. and leaking boxs with lots of play wont worry you as you only want the arm. wreckers want stupid money for them.
refitting involves pushing it on at the same angle as the old one, doing up the nut and re fitting your drag link - make sure you don this bit carefully to ensure the cups are sitting correctly or you will damage them.

*there's a rock, drive over it :) there's a bigger rock, drive over it  there's an even bigger rock, oops broke it  Upgrade broken bit :bad-words:

Nah its easy, unscrew the joint from the draglink, knock the broken bit of joint out of the pitman arm and put it back together, there is cups in the drag link that have springs and a grub style fitting that needs to be adjusted to suit the wear, it should be firm with no slop.
To remove it from the joints undo the flatblade grub style bolts in the end and away you go.
Let common sense prevail and double check everything when done, messing the steering up will cause death haha.
