GQ speedo jumping around????
GQ speedo jumping around????
I have a GQ patrol 4.2 petrol. For the last couple of weeks the speedo just wants to do random things some times works fine some times jumping around like a yo yo then some times nothing at all. Every other guage works with no problem. When the guage is playing up some times i can give the dash board a slap a few times and then it comes good but then other times does nothing. I have pulled it out blew it out with compressed air. Used a little bit of sand paper and cleaned the terminals but still no luck.
Is it time for a new cluster or is there anything else i should be looking at under the dash?
thanks steve

I have two GQ's
On one the speedo randomly works and randomly doesnt work
On the other it sits at 60km/hr when i'm anywhere below 60km/hr and when i'm above it will suddenly jump to the correct speed every now and then.
I have changed the transducer thing that bolts into the gearbox which didnt make any difference. I haven't tried changing instrument clusters.
As far as i can work out its just a GQ thing, like the digital clocks which work whenever they feel like it on both my GQ's.

I have stripped a few gq's and never seen anything in the left rear wheel arch. Where would it be on a coil cab? Do you have pics?monstr wrote:Had the same problem ,in the end it turned out to be the the control box which controls all the power to dash ,its located above the left rear wheel arch ,remove the inner panel to get at it ,its held in with 3 bolts and has 2 plugs with heaps of wires .Cheers
Sorry cant get any pics at the moment my trucks not here for a few days ,dont know about a coil cab but in both Safari"s ive owned its been in the same place ,above the rear passengers wheel arch ,you have to remove the inner upholstered side panel (normally just clipped in) and it will be bolted in with 3 bolts its in the cavity about 6-8 inches below the side windows .hope this helps..cheers
I had the same problem. It would jump all over the place or just read completely wrong. I used to be able to fix it by giving the top of the dash a bang but it finally stopped responding. I've tried cleaning the contacts on the wiring terminals but in the end I bought another one from a wrecker and it was spot on. Have seen them sold from as little as $50. Wreckers often try and extort up to $200 for them but i think around the $100 mark is the norm.
