roll cage exo cage metal. is 4mm 2 inch pipe too thinck?

Post by Hardzy »

been speaking to a sheet metal worker mate of mine who says that i need to use 4mm thinck 2 inch tube for an exo cage ( rooftop tnt mount for engineering) is this right? and purchase 90 and 45 degree bends to do the corners as bending the pipe creates a weak point.

this really doesnt sound right. but he has been in the trade for over 30 years.

and then there is all the extra weight

mm either you are taking the piss or you are asking and honest question, I will give you the benifit of the doubt.

Your mate is wrong on both accounts. Weld in bends are a bad idea and 4mm is to thick and heavy.

For an Exo I would suggest no more than 3.2mm (prob 2.8mm) wall and continueous lengths which are bent to make curves not had pre-formed bends welded into them.

weld in bends are for plumbers and exhaust shops ..

X2 on what SteelArt has to say man im a sheety by trade and theres no way id be using weld in bends in a exo and 50mm tube is overkill..
To do it right cold drawn seamless tube is the way to go and use a good tube bender like the JD3..
Cheers

I used 40nb 2.9wall on mine and it's holding up well on a few small dents in the pipe from mashing it on the rock hard, You can probably get away with a bow and arrow style bender with a good quality die, Idealy tho a jd or speed worx is the tool for the job
