Axle splines twisting and chromolly replacements

I noticed when i blew a hub and was repairing it that the short side rear axle splines are twisted. They are straight in the part that goes into the diff carrier but the last 15mm are twisted. Is this a sign that it's about to go bang or can they last like this for ages? I'm running 37's, on an intercooled turbo diesel so we're not talkiing normal duties here either.

Also if i get the replacement chromolly rear axles, how hard is it to drill the material in them?

I have done a 4x 8mm high tensile dowel conversion to the existing hub/flanges and i'd like to do the same to the new axles if i get them. Do you need special drill bits?

All this is on an 80 series rear axle

Its even weaker than before and is now guaranteed to break, I wouldn't even put it back in so it with save you pulling the centre out to get the broken bit of axle out when it does snap and so you don't risk damaging the locker. Not sure if you can get the cromo rears for cruisers tho, hilux's are a differant story.

Chromo axels are easy to get, would be best to speak with the supplier regarding drilling the flanges.

McNamara diffs also do chromo axels for Cruiser rear.

Used them in our rock crawling buggy with zero failures.

When i did the same i found the axle was also bent slightly - not enough to show visibly or by a rolling test (never tried a runout gauge) but enough to fark the new seal, spit out the gasket and break the studs in dramatic fashion.

thanks for the answers guys, and the supplier suggestions. I reckon i will just get a set of ChroMo's and not risk a breakage.

Can anyone clarify how hard it will be to drill the chromolly? i will be using the original dowel holes and extraction holes, just reaming them out to suit a 8mm 8.8 dowel

Mention it to the supplier, they might be able to do it for you.

If you are using the original dowls and just reaming the bolt hole then i dont think this will be an issue. Haultech used to do this very often i think when using 60 diffs.
I would use a die grinder with a straight bit.
Maybe Email Bobby from longs and ask them but i would bet it is not an issue.

I have the Same in the Back of the Vit ....after I went from Non Sticky 37" BFG Krawlers to 37" Sticky Trepodors I snapped two in axles in one weekend , this was just prior to Tuff Truck 08 I then Ordered a set of these ( well Hypo did) and these have lasted TT08 ,numerous Weekend Wheeling's / and then TT09 on 40" Trepodors .....Now I do only have a Stock 1.6 Turning them though ;) definatley the POO :cool:


And I think yoiu will find they wont need any extra drilling to suit your extra dowels (depending how you have drilled them in your hubs) I also have upgraded the studs to 3/8 UNC Allen Key Head Set screws ..and have had zero failures.

Dan, I'm assuming you've got toyota gear under the zook. I'm guessing that you drilled and tapped the M7 threads in the hub to take the 3/8 bolts.
Since 3/8" is 9.525mm, does that mean you had to re- cut the tapered holes in the flange? or did you just drill them straight and no longer use collets?

The way i wouold assume Dan has done it would be the same as most do it and drill the flange of the axel and not using collets.

Correct. Didnt hav to touch either the stock nor chromo axles to fit the 3/8 ,set screws i have heard of sum re-using the collets, i do hav 2 check and nip up b4 each run , but where we wheel loads up the axles a bit , etc etc, n yes i hav fitted 60 series diffs front n rear, on the front im using , 30 splines , bobbys chromo drive flanges n the same 3 /8 unc set screws with no collets just spring washers.
