Mod Plate after Turbo fitment?

Post by lilredluxury »

Is a mod plate req'd after fitting a surf turbo & 3in exhaust to a 2.8D hilux in QLD?
If so can anyone suggest a decent workshop around Brissie that can do it?

Im also considering getting a diesel mob to maybe check my fuel settings on a dyno just for peace of mind, any suggestions for where to take it and whether it'd be worth while? Cost?
(I've fitted a pyro & boost & set the fuel by watching the temp) It goes upto 500C pushing it over the gateway in 5th, is that about where it should be? (post turbo sensor in new dump pipe)

Oh did I mention I can now go over the Gateway Bridge in 5th & STILL ACCELLERATE with a 2.8 motor!!! Definately the best mod yet!

If you keep doing that you will be looking for a new gearbox, trust me i went through 4 of them

I know, but its so hard to resist with my new found power, (if you can call it that) after two years of hating uphills

So has anyone had their vehicle mod plated/dyno tuned in Brisbane and recommend anywhere for me to take the ute as I want to keep it legal.

mod plate for a turbo? fark qld sucks!

Gear box should be fine?!? I have done 70, 000 in mine now since the turbo went in, i tow 1.5 tonnes for 1000km days pulling everything its got as well as similar trips unloaded.

I see no reason why the gear box cant handle the massive 100hp. I know of people who have used them behind much bigger HP applications without issue.

And  they are the best mod ever!

I think he was saying that because of 5th being a weak gear in the 2.8d 5 speed G box. I THINK haha.

Im just about ready to bolt my ct20 on, but now im having problems getting the car to run properly.. think i may be up for a new injector pump :(.

balls!

5th gear is weaker in most cars, but no issues at all with mine yet and i drive it how i want too.

most gear box places ive ever spoken too have said its the back lash from round town driving that stuffs them - people getting into the softer 5th gear to early (sub 80kph) then on the gas - engine brake - on the gas - engine brake the whole time and that stuffs 5th in many cars.

just don't use 5th if going slower than 80kph, 5th in most cars is an overdrive for when you are traveling highway speeds hence the go to 5th when doing 80 or more

x2 dont stress about using the new power to cruise up hills in 5th gear mate. it will be fine.

i had a mate who had to rebuild his gearbox from a 2.8 coz he was towing in fifth, he's a toyota mechanic and said that 5th gear is really only held on the shaft with a circlip coz their only an overdrive and because like nearly every gear (bar reverse) their not straight cut teeth it pushes against the circlip thats holding it on, so when you increase the load or the acceleration in fifth it therefore increases the pressure on the circlip and if you do it alot than the circlip can bust and fifth gear be lost to floating around the gearbox to be eventually be eaten by the rest of the gears. thats why they blow boxs, so when towing it is advised to only use up too 4th gear, if you read ur user manual its all there clearly written, they wouldnt waste the money on the ink writing it in there if it wasnt true

Yeh i think so mate, i thought it sounded steep but was recomended to go there so didnt ask around. my fault.

Cheers fellas, i tow a trailer to work everyday, and i travel without a trailer to toowoomba frequently so see how it goes, if i do blow a box can you get box's with a stronger 5th gear? surf box?

yeah surf box's are recomended to be stronger, i'm not sure on the exact reason, it's just wot i hear but same thing, you shouldnt tow in fifth on them either. i dont think it matters on the occasional haul but if your a builder or sumthin and constantly rowing a trailer, i wouldnt recomend it.
