Non power steering box for 80 series
This may sound like a step backwards but is there a steering box that fits the 80 series that isn't powersteer? In my toyota manual there is one but I can't find any info on it on the net. Also did the 75 or 60 series come out without pwr steering and would it fit the 80? I'm tired of the oil leaks and i'm trying to simplify my ls1 engine swap by eliminating the powersteering crap.

sorry mate there isnt, except for say 40 series.
The 80s steering is designed for power steer so the steering will be stupidly heavy without it.
Look at the old non power steer models like the 40 series their steering linkages are totally different and rely on leverage as a mechanical advantage through bell cranks and what not.
What leaks are you having problems with?

Some Bunderas had no power steering, but the pitman arm faces the wrong way.
I have never seen an aussie delivered 80 w/out power steer, but, I know its possible.
I can't see a problem with it, plus you could make more power.
The box shouldn't leak, only the pumps tend to have issues on the 80 series...

hands and mums dont count!!!
Hmmm so the 80 didn't come out in Aus without power steering but there is a manual box in the Toyota workshop manual so i'm guessing that the 80's steering set up will work with a manual box. The pump it self had a leak somewhere but that is long gone with the cruddy old 1hz. The box itself looks to have maybe 2 leaks from the bottom and one from the back input seal.
I'd prefer to have the steering non power steer to simplify the car and to simplify the ls1 conversion.

theres nothing hard about hookin up the power steer on the ls1, u dont even need new lines.. just have to use the ls1 pump..Kitika wrote:Hmmm so the 80 didn't come out in Aus without power steering but there is a manual box in the Toyota workshop manual so i'm guessing that the 80's steering set up will work with a manual box. hardest part is trimming down the banjo bolt... that takes all of 30 seconds
absolute piece of piss
Im here for the sausage!
Mate, doesnt matter which forum you try, 80's in oz ALL came with power steering...Africa has the non power steering ones...there the barn door std comes with a factory turbo and no power steering called a gx....but in oz, you will have to manage with it.

Confucious say...man who argue with idiot, worserer himself
I meant cruiser steering box not pump. It's impossible to use the 1hz pwr steer pump on anything else but a 1hz as it is gear driven off the block.
How much for a steering box rebuild kit for those people that have done it before?
Different people go on different forums and may have extra info that I can't get from else where! Worth a shot anyways.Mate, doesnt matter which forum you try, 80's in oz ALL came with power steering...Africa has the non power steering ones...there the barn door std comes with a factory turbo and no power steering called a gx....but in oz, you will have to manage with it.
