c18escort/auto_eng/qld auto engineers advice needed.

Post by derangedrover »

Hypothetical question.

Take a 4wd with a full chassis, remove the body and build an 8 point 'roll cage' onto the chassis and retain original steering/brakes etc, how much drama will you have getting it registered in qld?
If the chassis is unmodified the compliance requirements are for the build date of the chassis, yes?
Can you get compliance without opening doors or a windscreen?
What about registering something like this as a farm implement and getting away with driving it regularly on the road (rural, not city)?
Anyone got a copy of the ADR's that would be willing to 'lend' me relevant portions? (got the light vehicle mod code but need ADR's and an interpreter....)

Cheers

Daryl,
I don't have a copy of the ADR's handy but my gut feeling is that you are likely to have quite a few issues getting it registered. There are things like proof that the rollover protection is as strong or stonger than that which was afforded by the body of the vehicle. There will also be issues with regards to the ability of limbs to flop out of the vehicle in the event of a roll over. As for the same sort of registration as a tractor I think that you will find that there are pretty strict regulations with regards to what is clarified as a tractor. Some more details would need to be provided. But in essence if it met all the ADR's for the relevant year of the vehicle and met the rollover criteria it should be possible but it would be in no way cheap.

Cheers

Just buy a 4x4 tractor, no issues at all then. ADR's, rego, insurance all taken care of. Build a cage, fill the tyres with DE-Hyro  and you're ready to hit the trails, can even drive the roads there.
Built, not bought.

Are you thing what I'm thinking Pinky?

I don't really see why you could not so long as you met all the ADR's. That's basically what a BushRanger is...sort of.

Provided you met the code of practice for the roll cage I think you would be ok. The requirement for a roll cage in convertibles was dropped because it was deemed to be above and beyond the requirements of the ADR.

The Rangie would have been originally manufactured as a off-road passenger vehicle. I'm not sure if your new 'cabin' would have to meet current or date of manufacture ADR's but I will check and let you know.

Your should be able to get registered without doors and a windscreen. There is a side door intrusion ADR but would not apply to this category of vehicle. I think you would have to put some panes on to protect you/public from the engine and the results of any malfunction it may have.

Don't know how relevant it is to what you're trying to do...

I read an article a few years back about a nice Forty Shorty on the Gold Coast. When it originally hit the road it was running without doors, but he was stopped and told to put some on.

I owned a Zook LJ50 with Corolla 3K, built by some friends in Adelaide in the early '90s. When it went through Regency Park it was topless without doors, and passed.

It's probably achievable in some states, but Queensland is probably different
