Request advice from those turbo guru's?

Post by monkeycritter »

Got my hands on a Garrett T04b, and there is only one drawback. It is externally gated. So my question to those I am seeking advice from is this, am I able to purchase an exhaust housing off a dead t04 from wreckers with an internal wastegate, and then fit to my turbo? This should then also enable me to ensure I get one with a smaller A/R of .48 or .63, instead of the 1.15 currently on it.

This should then enable me to run it on my TD42. I am aware that I may need to machine the hole for the turbine wheel, and I can get this done for nothing at an engineering firm. Has anyone tried the T04b, not the T04E? And has anyone got any thoughts on the ability to change housings?

what you say will work.

But its pritty big.

Boost @ around 2800rpm

The smaller AR will turn it into the "off the shelf" petrol T4

The Diesel T4 which is a T3/T4 hybrid has a better hot side rotor angle for the low speed exhaust

If you can do it cheap though, go for it.

I should have been more clear, it is a T04B27, and based on my research, is a diesel not a petrol t4. Off a mercedes motor actually. But that is about my limit of knowledge. So any further assistance would be greatfully acepted!

I thought that if I could get an exhaust housing with a small a/r, would help it spool up earlier?? Any thoughts?

Might be easier to bootyfab up an external wastegate outlet. There is a current thread on here showing exactly this - but you can find it yourself! :P

I did have (years ago) a sd33 patrol with high mount to4b external wastgate and v band clamping. It did boost late in the rev range but it was a weapon. It was fitted more for a laugh as I had it sitting around but did work very well for me.

Back then I delt with a company called rotormaster in campbellfield (melbourne) for my balancing/turbo parts.

Give them a call, they really know their stuff and will point you in the right direction.
