Troopy jumping out of 5th gear

Post by ryangus »

I'm sure this is a pretty common problem, as my old 92 model did it also, but a search showed nothing.

My Dad's 86 model 4.0L diesel troopy was jumping out of 5th gear. The problem had got that bad, that he put it into the mechanic for repairs. He picked it up yesterday, and $7500 later it's still doing it! Obviously he's not a happy camper...

So, I'm lead to believe that the repairs basically entailed a full gearbox rebuild. So, what has the mechanic stuffed up or forgotten to do that would still cause it to jump out of 5th gear?

$7500.....your mechanic has ripped you off. For that kinda cash it should drive like a dream.
I'd be takin it back to said RIP OF MERCHANT and makin him fix it for that kinda money, A fully reco box and transfercase can be bought forand installed for just under $5000.
It realy gets me goin when I hear stories about so called MECHANICS rippen people of, and to add salt to the wound it still dident fix the problem.
In answer to your question, yes the mechanic has missed somthing and he needs to repair it but do not let him charge you any more money.
Good luck

clearances were maybe not done properle worn hub and a syncro or maybe he put something in wrong for the money you spent it should be spot on. 7500 thats steep as id want to know what he replaced ive rebuilt gearboxes that were completly stuffed torn teeth bent shafts for half that price.

Apparently he had a heap of other work done, and it appears the gearbox came to around $4500 including labour. Still doesn't explain the thing still jumping out of gear though!

I had same problem with a discovery but it was not going into gear properly, had a gearbox rebuild same problem still there, it turned out to be the body lift fitted to it and the gear lever and the rubber boot didnt have enough room to get into gear properly. I spent money on a rebuild i didnt need.
