Hit me with tech - diffs and lobster questions!!!!!
Hit me with tech - diffs and lobster questions!!!!!
Ok lads heres my problem. Im sure its not a new one but Im struggling to find any info elsewhere.
I have a 92WT zook and want to put a locker in the rear and although I havent pulled my diff apart am led to believe I will find a 2 pinion. Im also wanting to do the rocklobster conversion.
I have sourced a 1.3lt front diff from a lwb NT zook, its 3.9 and assume the same as a NT 1lt diff? I also got the T/Case to make a rocklobster with my 84 1lt T/Case that I have.
So the questions are
1) Is a LWB 1.3 T/Case the same as a SWB one, and therefor good for the lobster conversion?
2) Can I fit my locker (1510) to the LWB NT 1.3 (3.9) center and slap it in the rear of my WT housings? I realise the ring and pinion will need swapping with my 3.7's - is this a pain to set up? I have been quoted $250 upwards, where as I can get another 3.9 center for $100.
Im running a turbo GTI set up on 30's. Will a lobster and 3.7's be getting over the top for 30's?
Any input would be handy. Cheers.

Why not just fit it to your WT diff centre ?flickaz wrote:

your front is most likely a 2 pin centre, but your rear should be a 4 so wont your locker fit straight in???? save mucking around with swapping ring n pinion or carriers or whatever...or have i misread your hole post
the 3.9 NT front centre you got will be 4 pin?AFAIK lwb/swb same case so should work for you,is it worth the mucking round doing LOBSTEr setup though? And a 1 litre diffs smaller centre again mate

Can see your point with the extra power, but I have 5.14 TC gears, stock diffs and 32 inch Pedes and my 2 pinion front end has taken a flogging on all sorts of terrain and has held up fine.flickaz wrote:Im told it the lockright can be fitted to a 2 pinion, but a 4 is preferred. I'd like to be on the safe side when Ill be increasing my torque with lower gearing (rocklobster) and the fact I already run 100rwKw.
In saying that I also thought the rears are 4 pinion ?

buy the second 3.9 diff you were talking about.
set the locker up for the rear and just do a day center swap front and rear, just make sure you get the side gears right for F & R aplications..
as for the lobster, what were you asking.
as far as i no you need a 1litre (with 4WD light switch) case and your 1.3 one. there is plenty of links around for more info.
ps i have the welded gear you need on my desk infront of me

My question was is a T/Case out of a LWB NT 1.3 the same as any normal 1.3 case and therefor good to use with my 84 (4WD switch) case for my lobster conversion?11_evl wrote:as for the lobster, what were you asking.

What did the gear set you back to have machined??
i think that both your cases will be the same. BUT considering the cars are so old now id be pulling both apart to check if they are original. may have been changed in a previous lifeflickaz wrote:My question was is a T/Case out of a LWB NT 1.3 the same as any normal 1.3 case and therefor good to use with my 84 (4WD switch) case for my lobster conversion?11_evl wrote:as for the lobster, what were you asking.

i think i paid $250-$280 for gear to be done

280 for that welded piece of junk that going to snap in a matter of weeks and destroy everything in the transfercase, or buy Trail Tough 6.5/1 billet gears for about $Au 500. We made those welded gears 15 years ago when the Rocklobster gearing first came out, then we had gears pressed together with a keyway slot built in, then Rockhopper caught on and made one-piece gears but were made of metal similar to cheese and werent worth 2 cents. Now the best gears seem to be made in the US of A . I got a new set from LowRange Offroad for $US475. So even though your gears are $280, it often doesn`t pay to get the cheapest. Anyway, I`m sure you will find out soon or later.

Only the Maruti ute`s have the 12% lower gearing as standard, they may be 1ltr but had the 1.3ltr case with 4wd light and 12% gears.mrRocky wrote:pretty sure only the 1ltrs came with 12% lower gearing and you want the one with the 4wd light.
1ltr diffs are 4.1

for sure i dont doubt you for a second, altho i have been running the cut and shut in my car for over a yr now with no problems as far as gears go. thats 16v, cut and shut, 4.8 lux diffs, and 35 peds. now running 37 creepys. have about 5 hard core trips on the 37s so far and the only problem i have had is the output shaft dog gear not holding...Bentzook wrote:280 for that welded piece of junk that going to snap in a matter of weeks and destroy everything in the transfercase, or buy Trail Tough 6.5/1 billet gears for about $Au 500. YES the best way is to get the gears from lowrange, US$475, you cant go wrong atm. esspecially with the $ getting great.
but at the time i got mine done that what i had available and the op came up. so i had 3 sets done
michael
1ltr cases have lower gearing than 1.3 cases, switch light or non switch light.Bentzook wrote:Only the Maruti ute`s have the 12% lower gearing as standard, they may be 1ltr but had the 1.3ltr case with 4wd light and 12% gears.mrRocky wrote:pretty sure only the 1ltrs came with 12% lower gearing and you want the one with the 4wd light.
1ltr diffs are 4.1
the 1ltr switch light case is the same as a 1.3, just the ratio is different.

Well it looks like the rock lobster idea is on the back burner. The guy I was buying it off had a mix up and I wont be getting one from him. So im looking more seriously at the off the shelf import alternatives. Im only on 30's with no intention of going any bigger.
New Questions
1) Which gears come with the best warranty and reputation?
2) When a reduction is mentioned ie 12% does that mean you will decrease your speed by 12% for the same engine rpm? I assume this is right? I ask this as with my turbo gti I can go out to 8000rpm and in low range that still pushes up to the 100km/h range, imho a pathetic low range. As I dont drive any faster than about 110km/h in high range I effectively have 2 lots of gears that can achieve similar speeds. I am considering 4.16 gears, any ideas?
