no more problems than on a GQ as they are identical diffs(except for the autolocking hubs of course) I have been running them for a while with no issues. 16" do give you a better selection of tire sizes thou.

why do so many people upgrade their GQ diffs, to GU diffs then? for auto hubs & bigger brakes? heh

Ok, unless the S4 or petrol models have different brakes, and diff for that matter, the y61 td42 wagon is the same as the GQ in the front and rear diffs except for the auto locking hubs.
I have heard about the GU CV's being stronger but according to my nissan sevice manual they are the same parts.

The 4.8 petrol GU's use bigger front brake calipers, 15" rims will not fit.
They will however fit on 4.5, 4.2 petrols and all diesels.

RE 15 inch rims on Gu

Post by TOY ETA »

I have a 2003 leaf sprung DX ute and I can tell you that 15 inch rims will not fit over the fromt brake callipers but will fit on the rear.Possibly if you put a fairly big offset on the front you may fit 15s.

So that wouldn't be a problem with the rim being 15", just your rims having the wrong offset. I think we're talking about caliper radius clearance here - not spoke clearance.

My brothers GU ute ran 15x8 rims no worries.

Also, make sure if you're buying wheels that the centre hole is the right size - i've come across a few sets that were a whisker too small and wouldn't fit over the hub.

I run 15x8 Kings on my GU TD42 and they fit. Landcruiser offset (-22 or something).

I have around 3-5mm clearance between the rim and the caliper (diameter clearance). Been running them for a year now without issues.

Having said that, I have recently tried my mates 16" wheels and they did NOT fit over the caliper at all as they were "factory flipped".
Also some rims are shaped differently (inside dish) which can cause cearance issues also.
