GQ SWB QUESTION

Post by JUST1N_MC »

Guy's im looking at buying a SWB GQ and was wanting to know what to look for when purchasing one. I did a search but couldn't find a buyers guide or anything of the sort.

What sort of money should I be paying for a decent one and what are my chances of sleeping in the back of it without the rear seats when i'm 6'1 tall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LWB *just* fits a normal ~180cm mattress in the back with the second and third row seats removed (or second row folded down and something lifting the mattress up so it can lie over them). SWB... no way known, it needs to be understood that an SWB Patrol is SMALL and probably has less f***** space in the back than a modern hatchback does (slight exaggeration only). This is not to say they aren't cool.
This is not legal advice.

i paid 3500 for mine from a car yard, with 200 000 kms stock as a rock, if you have time wait around till the right one comes up, mines a petrol but soon to be diesel, wath for signs of overheating, as may be a head or a jead gasket, i sleep in mine, no rear seats, fronts folded forward using them sorta like a back rest but im tiny.

Where abouts do you buy them from? All the one's on carsale and the like seem to be going for big dollars. Especially if it has a Nissan badge on it opposed to a Ford badge.

mine was just a lucky find, was going to melbourne on a saturday to look at one for 5 gs when i saw one in a local car yard, dropped in, said it is to be sold as traded with no rwc, top of the range mav with sunroof, full electrics, rear diff lock. mav swb are more common from what i have seen, no difference, keep your eye out, check the cars page here on outers aswell

Looks like patience is going to be the key to finding one at a reasonable price.

I didn't really want to spend more than $5K on one and most out there seem to be getting over the 300,000km mark. I think i'll just have to wait for the right car.

Have you got a link to your car Turps?

How many Kms's at the TB42's generally good for?

I'm worried that 300,000+km's on some of the cars out there i'm going to have engine issues. Especially the ones on gas.

I bought my 89 SWB GQ (Maverick model) from a yard. they were asking for 6 but if you go to the yard and give them a good check and make an offer then they'll consider, i just went back a couple of days later and said ill still pay 4 so they accepted. was pretty happy with it, TB42, 5" lift, winch bar and a few other extra's and all in good nick with just over 200k on the clock.

there are a few good ones going cheap but yea i've checked them out on car sales and they all want a bit much i think. if you can get a bargain then it doesnt take too much work to tidy it up or even convert the engine.

so best bet mate is a yard or on the forums like this one. wont regret getting one
