Hey All,
another newbie question. i have a 95 dual cab hilux (2.8D) that rolls back when in gear with handbrake on sitting on a hill. I have recently tightened the handbrake (as we all no toyota handbrakes are up to s**t). Now my biggest concern is the car should not still move when engaged in gear parked on a hill. If I move the car in any form (closing the doors, jumping on the tray) on a decent sized hill (turned off, in 1st gear on an upslope, no foot on the clutch) it will begin to roll back!
Any ideas what this means?
How i can fix it?
One of the guys mentioned compression - but theres plenty of compression in the engine when im driving and down changing gears.

I think you will find if you put the car in low range it will stop rolling.
Maybe get the drums machined and some new pads (possibly doesn't hold because its shiny and hard pads? bit of a guess)
Mine does the same, in 2wd 1st gear it rolls a foot or two at a time but in 4wd low, 1st it doesn't roll.

Did you tighten up the handbrake cable forward of the 2 cables back to the drums, or did you loosen off the handbrake cable, then adjust the rear brakes correctly, and then readjust the handbrake cable to give application 1/3 of the handle pull.
Most often, poor handbrake performance, is linked firstly to poor brake adjustment, or condition.
this is where the handbrake uses the existing rear brakes, not the ones with their own drum/ shoes, disc on the inside of discs or on tailshafts.

The later models have slightly larger drum brakes which you can interchange and will help heaps, mine is a 1993 LN106 diesel and it had never rolled back (though every time i drive through the mud i have to readjust the cable under the truck)
My mate had a 84 and it never rolled back, so i'd be looking at the pads, drum condition and the way it is adjusted...
I was not aware it could roll back in gear thought with the clutch out and in first it would be impossible unless the gears are broken, they will all roll back a little but is usually backlash in the gears....
Correct me if i'm wrong....

also i had my drums done a while back an new shoes in the rear adjusted the brakes up an then the cable, it helped but if the hill was steep enough it would still roll back through the box.
i clean my drums out after every outing to make sure they are clean an dry but still have the issue from time to time.

Just realised you said 95, when i wrote that about the bigger drums i thought i read 85... your truck already has the bigger drums...
But you should not have to use wood, there is some thing wrong there, maybe you have no pads left or it would have to be incorrectly adjusted.
There is two adjustments, 1 in the handbrake cable and the other inside the drum for the wheel cylinders.
If the cylinders are way out of adjustment then the handbrake cable wont be able to have full contact and thus a pretty crappy handbrake...
If you are not sure put it in the mechanics (a good 4b mechanics) and get it inspected and fixed properly..
Still i can leave mine in gear and it does not roll? strange

thanks guys! i have booked it in for a mechanic to have a look, still a newbie at this so want to ensure i get it right... especially something like brakes.
However i am still interested as FRLS4B wrote the car should not roll back if in gear i would have thought? well not if compression and everything is ok i would think?

I used to be a brake mech, and then moved to light vehicle, and did quite a bit on just brakes clutch and susp.
So before you take it to the mech.
Do this.
Loosen off what you tightened, so there is slack to the rear cables.
get the rear wheels off the ground, it jack stands.
Remove wheels, and drums, make sure you have good lining left, and the cyls are not leaking, and that the adjusters are not siezed.
Refit, and then adjust up the shoes till they start to drag on the drum, then pull on the handbrake cable to seat the shoes, the dragging will stop, adjust up till you have a slight noise, drag, and your good to go.
Do same for other side.
some people say to do them up till they lock, then with a screwdriver over the self adjusting cam, loosen it off till you have slight noise, drag.
I find that the first way is a good start, and easier to begin with.
Then adjust handbrake as I described earlier, say pulls on in 1/3 to 1/2 of hte pull.
Make sure that whilst adjusting the brakes first that the cable is slack, and not taking up part of the adjustment.
Easy, simple, and if that dosent work, take it to the mechs.

Hand brake has been tightened properly now provides decent support however the main point is the car will still role back when in gear on a hill. Thinking it has to be something with compression? Even though dosnt appear to be the case (down change compression is great) the clutch isnt slipping so i am a bit lost for options.
As this is my everyday car also i need to try and fix it - without spending to much $$$.
Can anyone recomend a good 4x4 mechanic in Sydney they would take a look at it?

does the car start ok? does the car use oil? does the car run well?
if you answered yes, no, yes. then stop stressing and accept that your car is not new.
with alot of stuff on cars its worth fixing early - brakes are a good example, with a little wear on an engine, service it well and run it till the wear is effecting its drivability. diesels cost a bomb to get rebuilt so dont do it unless it needs it.
