Were are they normaly wired to every one i talk to says into the back of the alternator is this right, and can the average DIYer do this from home or is it better left to the auto electrician.

Wiring into the alternator won't work at all.

What type of car are you looking at wiring it into?

Yes it will.

Many cars, particularly diesels have the tacho running off the alternator.

All my tacho's on the diesels I've owned have run off a alt winding.

And yes, unless you know what you are doing, just pull the alt and take it to the sparky to connect. I'd get them to give the alt a once over while there with new bearings etc while at it.
