my cluch fan has died and the price of a new one is a bit out there. would it be possible to get rid of it and install el thermo fans instead. cheers thanks for your time

Unless u can find a thermo fan that can pump out as much air flow as the stock viscouse I wouldn't go muckin around trying to change things. Manufacturers match a fan with a cooling system to work specifically for that application. U could do it hard core and put In a big desert cooler radiator and run a big truck oil cooler fan on a 24v system. That would give u piece of mind. But massive overkill

I have a 1990 GQ LWB 4.2 duel fuel auto, I have mounted a set of EF falcon twin thermo's onto my original radiator and have had no troubles at all, I live in western Victoria where it gets dam hot. If you do the conversion make sure you get the fans that one is a duel speed, the whole fan shroud will mount straight onto a standard GQ radiator. I have it hooked up so that the single speed fan is hooked to the ignition thru a relay, also a switch on the dash to turn it off if going thru water, then the other fan is ran thru duel relays to a multi position switch on the dash, marked "LOW & HIGH", but so far I have only ever used the low speed a couple of times in the bush on hot days when just crawling around slowly. I plan to hook up the main fan through a temp switch but I may not. It all works great now. I picked up th EF fans from EBAY including postage for $65, then go to a wreckers and get an ea-ed bank of relays cutting enough wire to rejoin and hook it all up. But that is just my 2 cents worth.

I and a couple of mates have tried electric fans on our petrol and diesel gqs - all with proper shrouds / twin fans and relays. and none of them have worked too well , we still had over heating problems with them here in nsw .
We all ended up putting our clutch driven fans back on , after we refilled them with the silicone that Jimbo said previously we got from toyota, was about $12 if i remember , and this fixed all our problems with over heating .
Or you could just go buy a new coupling from repco or similar i think they are around $150 new .

Try Blackburn 4x4 or Ebay seller matts0510, They sell genuine Nissan gear at very good prices.
I have bought a Genuine fan clutch from them for around $120 not too sure as I've bought a bit of stuff there, Give them a try.
