Trail-Gear buying direct?

Post by Jcas24 »

Has anyone bought direct from Trail-Gear in the US?

I wanna support local business but parts are so much cheaper over there and I was wondering if shipping costs would consume most of the money saved from buying locally? I wouldn't be looking at shipping anything to heavy.

Everything that I have tried to buy direct from TrailGear has ended up being more expensive than buying it from Locktup. This is for bits like: cromoly axles, high steer, dual adapter, twin stick...

Just got a quote back from them for shipping of a dual adaptor and twin stick = $US300!

That doesnt sound right when i was gonna get my high steer kit through them it was 300US for the kit + 180US shipping still less then $850AUD locktup wanted, but if something went wrong its too far away to worry about saving $200, you'd spend that much sending it back for warranty.

Really? What am I doing wrong then? Is there a different postal service that you are asking for? Because the three quotes from them have all been huge!

I just bought in a 250 lb pallet with some gear inc pairs of sidesteps etc, and it was air freight inc duties and GST $490 took 6 days to arrive.

U.S postal only works out well with the $40 and $60 boxes under 20 lb normally.

Well they said it would take up to 3 weeks so maybe it was a different postal service that was 3 months ago now, but i never went through with it maybe they did stuff up the quote...

I asked TG about a cheaper carrier, or way to get stuff over here cheaper.
Here's the reply:
TG wrote:I regret to inform you that we only ship UPS we do not use usps so there is no cheaper carrier. You may want to price out a freight forwarder that's in the united states to forward the packages to you then its just the shipping cost for us to them and a separate charge for their services.

I'll put another vote in for using Locktup. They have been great to deal with and I have never had a problem with any of my orders.

The other thing that I think is worth remembering is that if you have any reason to have an item replaced under warenty you would be dealing with a company that is in Australia and not with a company in the States.
