How to modify the 1HD-FTE rocker cover

Post by fester2au »

Hey guys anyone know more detail about what the FTE rocker covers are made from and what therefore is the best way to modify one. I would like to look at moving the hump from the middle to the back. They appear to be ceramic or fibreglass or some form or fibre reinforced plastic although I haven't cut into it to be sure. I'm thinking of either fibreglassing hte bits back into place or if the material is sutiable taking to someone to plastic weld. Just nto sure what it is and what method is compatible.

I've tossed up getting an FT rocker cover which has the hump in the correct place but given the rarety of these engines I suspect the rockers by themselves to be rarer again and the project does not warrant the cost of a new cover nor wreckers rates even if they have one.

Just knock up a rough mould using the original and build a fibreglass one.

if they are the same stuff as the 1HZ - 1HD-T rocker covers it is an ABS and more or less completely un-repairable.

tried wreckers for an aluminium 1HD-FT cover?

That has crossed my mind but I've got a million other things to do before I even bother trying. Not that difficult though. If I had plenty of spare time I'd go for a sheet ally one.

Yeah I did get a confirmation from lcool that it is unrepairable, can't be welded and fibreglass patching is not so successful either.

May do the wrecker run around just that I expect with the rarety of the engine then a rocker cover is going to be priced accordingly.

i realise that hz hdt diesels have plastic, and am guessing the fte has gone back to plastic...but the ft was alloy....i would think that you could cut the fte hump off...even if it ment making it completely flat....by rewelding back in the piece you cut out minus some of the height..the fumes can be sorted by using a catch can plumbed back into turbo return....

You're a bit mixed up Andrew, this is where my problem lies. The FT cover is alloy but it has the hump at the back already which is wher eI want it so it would be fine if I could find one cheap. The HZ also had it to the rear or course. The FTE is the one I have and need to move but yest it has definately gone to a plastic type material which cannot be successfully rewelded or fibreglassed apparently so moving or removing the hump in the FTE cover is not viable.

Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open and pray a cheap FFT version crops up somewhere.

Well I bit the bullet and rang around the wreckers on Saturday and I could nto find a 1HD-FT rocker cover anywhere on the east coast of Aus. Not that they didn't want to part out a good motor by the way the conversations went it would appear there have hardly ever if at all been a 1HD-FT 80 series wrecked in Aus!!!!!!! And if there was it would appear the cover could run anywhere to $200+.
