Vitara G16B Head Gasket

Post by Goatse.AJ »

Well, ya know what they say about lettin' the missus drive ya truck? (Flame suit ON)

The Vit has been using coolant for a while, but finally sh@t herself yesterday....a pre-existing head gasket problem I knew about when we bought it.

Can anybody tell me if I need any fancy "Suzuki special" tools to get the head off? ...i.e. are the head bolts standard bolts or some funny hex things? Torque setting for putting her back together would be great too. Should have the head off tomorrow night, ready to be sent away for machining and maybe a bit of a port job.

Thanks in advance,

They are allen head bolts and you will need to get the rocker gear out so you can get to some of the bolts.

Thanks for the replies dudes.

I've decided to do the rings while the head is off (sh'e got 175K on the clock)...has anybody managed this without taking the whole thing out? The plan is to drop the sump to get at the crank, etc. Any hints? Or should I bite the bullet and take it out?

Ummm... crossmember in the way.

Min had about 190 compression at 220k...

Check compression first... if rings are shot a wet test will prove it....

Anything under about 180PSI wet do the rings (170 minimum factory spec) 199 brand new

Didn't bother checking compression coz of blown head gasket... I'm just trying to avoid the ol' "fixed the top end probs, now the extra compression makes her blow smoke" problem.

As for the x member, I'm hoping to be able to jack the motor up enough to get the sump out....has anybody managed this, or do ya gotta pull her right out?
