308 Red in Hilux
Howdy All,
Well the faithful old 3Y of mine has all but given up the ghost.
I have almost in my possesion a 308 Red motor from a mates old truck, (pre '82 with 18r).
I will get everything I need for it to run bar a radiator, bellhousing and exhaust. Is anyone running one in their lux??
The adapter kit he bought was a dellow one.
Anyone have a guesstimate of economy?? I know that they (V8's) like to run at highway speed sitting on 1600-1800rpm...so if I change my ratios to 5.29's (currently have 4.11's and 35"s) this should help shouldn't it?? It is running a Rochester 4-barrel. And was not long ago rebuilt
What radiator should I use??
And finally...apparently I can re-drill a holden bell-housing to match my box (g52) if I have a template, is this true?? If not...anyone (in qld) got a spare??
Anything else I should worry about??
Thanks All,
Damien

Don't let you mind wander...it is too little to be out there by itself.
Damian you cant just re-drill the bellhousing. If you had an early celica 5spd in it you could but this isnt possible.
Fuel economy will be up the shiat.Allways no mater what you do.
It will run hot offroad and prob on the highway as well.
Your rig will not have 4.1 diffs in it now it will have 4.88s.It would not push a set of 4.1s with 35s and a 3y.
You will get the best economy out of it if you can get a pair of 4.1 diffs.Very rare and only came to aus in the rear of some import V6 surfs for wrecking.
The only Radiator bar a custom one that will even come close to cooling it is a V8 commodore one.
And you will need to cut the grill up to fit a decent thermo fan because you cant run an engine fan.
Is there anything else to worry about?
Yes
Start looking for a supply of 5spd gearboxs cause they dont like V8s on road.
Expect to dint the sump with your front diff off road.
And did i mention the fuel they use?
Anyway depending on what bolt patern 308 you are getting i may have a bellhousing to suit.

i looked at doing this to mine and it just isnt worth it, i had bought the 308 and it was going to be cheap as to rebuild but when i priced out all the other parts it was would have come to about 2000 more than first planned.
As lame as it would be, the only reason i would do it would be 308 t700 and a 9inch in the rear, leave it 2wd for towing, other than that i couldnt see the point.

Thanks Tony for your reply...
I know that it would use a heap of fuel. But I am young only once
It was already in a lux and all bugs were sorted out for his ( ie cooling, cables, etc) and the radiator he used worked fine...just cannot remember what it was.
The bell-housing is a turbo one, he sold the dellow one, but said a mate has a template that I can use to match it to a toyota box. Already has a modfied sump and clears everything fine, (ie, from a lux)
I just wanted to know whether it would be worth it. So thanks all for your replys.
The motor I can if I do get it, is only $600 as he wants it to go. Been rebuilt before he put it in. That is why I considered it...cheap to buy and install as I can do it myself and since I dont need to move engine mounts, I can always put the old 3Y back in later. Only dopwner I didn't like is fuel.
Thats why I am not really interested in your Chev Tony, just too expensive for me.
Once again, thanks for the advice. Youhuys can cut sick at my questions if you want as I do only want your honest, uncensored opinions. As bud said, it is a forum.

Ok if it was fitted to a vehicle with an 18R you will defianatly need to re-make engine mount adapters or move your existing ones. Also no template will make a standard holden bellhousing mate up to a G52/W56 gearbox. No way No how it just wont happen. I know exactly what your mate is thinking. He has an adapter to re-drill a holden bellhousing to suit an early steel case celica 5spd(which requires a piece of 10mmx10mm alloy welded across the bottom to drill the lower holes not an alloy case 5spd supra box which is basicaly fitted to a hilux. The holden bellhousing is nothing like the alloy case gearbox and can not be modified in any way to suit. Also holden did not ever have a hydrolic clutch set up on there V8 so how will you hook the clutch up? They were all cable or ratrap.
But i do have a bellhousing to suit if needed.
I am not trying to convince you to buy my engine or my bellhousing. It can sit here for ever for all i care.If i wanted to sell it bad i would have advertised it in the trader.
I just know exactly what is involved in fitting a holden V8 to a hilux and all the probs you will encounter.
Take it like you want but just remember when you start having probs"I TOLD YOU SO".
I have though seen EFI 308s run fine but never a carbed one.
One more question. How will you get a red motor complied in a vehicle that must have no earlier than a blue engine fitted?

He just drove to cairns, two and a half tanks latter and hes there.
Now i know two and a half tanks dont seem that much but when its a 110 litre tank it does sound quite a bit.
275 litres for a little over 1200km.
I think he has something wrong. I can get 450km to a 60 litre tank on a country run. I have a 5lt efi with a 5speed 4.88 diff's running 35" BFG's. I got better economy then my brother 2.4 lt turbo surf running 32" BFG's, on the same trip.

Re: 308 Red in Hilux
TOYrantula, The conversion is doable, but I would go for an EFI motor and probably a v6. The v6 will have better power and fuel ecomony then the old red motor. It will fit better and drive alot better, especially off road.
However I have a holden 5.0lt efi motor, which does not overheat. I run power steering and air-con with a engine fan (and thermo with the A/C) and a 3-core v8 radiator with NO cutting. I do run a 2" body lift and that is it. This is my second conversion with this motor. The first one I cut the lower radiator support to fit the radiator and had no A/C. But on the current one I got the radiator to fit with the A/C and engine fan!! It can be done you just need the right parts and planing.
Chris.

308 red
I have to agree with Tony, 308 carbie can be a pain in the ass unless you have the time to set them up.
I run one in my lux, with no probs...BUT i do run gass. I had no choice to run gass to get it approved cos its in a 96 model.
I pref the 8 over the 6...i also wanted a "simple"motor without a computer...which was the main reason for going for an older motor...it also needed to be fully rebuilt.
dont forget that there are little probs with the older motors such a dizzys and the like. Most
dizzys are screwed on the old motor...you may find yourself tuning
the damn thing every weekend!...and adding extra cost to the whole deal...a new HEI can cost anywhere between $190- $1000+ for flash ones
I have no idea how many km / l i get....to give u an idea, north gold coast to south side brizzy & back...and not under it im using about $30 - $35
Tonys v6 sounds like a good buy...i take it that it is all ready to drop in
to a lux..so it saves stuffing around drilling bellhousings etc the V6 could also be cooled via the lux rad. (depending on which one u have). he also knows whats needed to fit it so your budget can better worked out

I dont know if somebody has allready said this but a 308 is a little big for a g52 gearbox. The G52 gearbox is very weak and will not handle the power of a high output engine very well...If you are going to use it then you better nurse it becuase I can tell you now it will probably not last long unfortunatly.

Yep I got the Chev
All in and bolted and stuff....now I gotta sort out the wiring Tried doin it sober...didn't help much. So I switched to the alchohol Enhanced mode and ended up wiring stuff up that I didn't even need Stereo is workin though
Mate came round, has same motor so I copied off his hoses and the like...but he's not running any pollution gear at all, only a cat. He bought his off a mechanic who approved it himself. So I raced down to the place where I am getting mine done and he said noway, no how. Got to have my pollution gear running or better. Which isn't a drama, cause there isn't that much.
So give me a couple more days, and HOPEFULLY, she'll be up and running

Rob they dont have sump clearance issues if they are fitted with the right sump which this engine is. And the starter prob can be fixed if fitted with a tilton High Tourque starter which this engine also has.
But you are right about the trackbar issue they usually come up and break the stock starter clean off the block.

sorry tony!! i wasnt trying to say your conversion was bad!! as i saw it and it looked good!! and i knew you would know about any of the issues
yes they do break the stock starter clean off the block i waited when i 4runner i was wheeling with did that once hours and hours it took us
a simple crossover would fix it, but this dude, was like....nah i dont thik ill ever go 4WDriving again, its mainly to tow my boat anyways
