Turbo or engine upgrade for SWB GQ
Turbo or engine upgrade for SWB GQ
hey guys,
i've recently bought an 89 SWB GQ (Maverick) and want to do something to the engine to give it more grunt. the TB42 is dual fuel on gas and i have been considering either fitting a turbo or swapping the engine for an rb or i can get my hands on a Nissan y33 VH41DE half cut V8 engine.
Basically im just after your thoughts and experience regarding the upgrades as well as a rough idea of costs to fit a second hand turbo or engine (if i have already bought the parts). plus... will the Nissan y33 VH41DE fit straight under the bonnet???

not too sure about costs yet, dont want to go owed the top but want it to be reliable and worth the time and money, i have no idea as to how much an engine conversion id going to cost. i can get a good engine with everything but yea instillation costs are probly too expensive. im leaning more towards a turbo. will i need to intercool it but?
You don't have to, however you'd be mad if you didn't.Kav wrote:not too sure about costs yet, dont want to go owed the top but want it to be reliable and worth the time and money, i have no idea as to how much an engine conversion id going to cost. i can get a good engine with everything but yea instillation costs are probly too expensive. im leaning more towards a turbo. will i need to intercool it but?
Do a bit of digging around here, there's quite a few build threads on turboed TB42's both LPG and petrol.
WTF, so you think they got a Ford Maverick??cooki_monsta wrote:i thought they were bought by ford for the specific use of release in america ???? cos nissan couldnt release it therebj on roids wrote:he can't own a GQ (Maverick) that range was only ever released in Australia.
could be wrong tho
HID KITs

They were rebadged as fords here because of the "button plan"
You will find a lot of the "badge engineered" cars we all know and love are from that era, the barina/swifts, the lexcen/commodores, the 626/telstar, pintara/corsair... etc.
What Ford did here was completely unrelated to ford in the US. Plus the US already had a ford model called the maverick:
HID kits
This is not legal advice.
A speed camera would have prevented that!
I googled him and he has bombarded other sites about his HID kits.chimpboy wrote:Is it just me or is this Peter Kesel bloke a bit dodgy...One minute he's got a 99GU and is spamming HID kits, the next minute he's got an 89 Mav (yeah there are lots of them in LA) and is spamming HID kits.

Peter, if you are out there, looking forward to seeing pictures of your 89 GQ Maverick outside Disney Land or another US icon.

Anything is possible, the setup of a supercharged TB42 as opposed to a turboed TB42 would basically need a similar setup anyway, so really its whatever tickles your fancy. I'm a turbo fan as there are endless turbo configurations available, plus they can be had cheap.Kav wrote:yea will do
how about a supercharger. a guy said to me today i could do it but i havent heard of a supercharged tb42 petrol/gas. can it be done? and how much if anyone knows?
cheers
Turbo's also have the benefit of being able to sneak around sedately off-boost (which i like a lot).
i must be mad then lolcoxy321 wrote:You don't have to, however you'd be mad if you didn't.Kav wrote:not too sure about costs yet, dont want to go owed the top but want it to be reliable and worth the time and money, i have no idea as to how much an engine conversion id going to cost. i can get a good engine with everything but yea instillation costs are probly too expensive. im leaning more towards a turbo. will i need to intercool it but?

I'm sure you factored that into your build though. What were your reasons?
