where to put alternator
where to put alternator
hi all.
ok, well i went to the auto sparkey 2day, and after a long chat with him about my alternator, and my loads, and my current car setup, i decided that i think i need a 2nd alternator. but my problem is that i have installed an endless air setup, so i am unsure if i can. if so, where can i mount it? cheers

You may find you get more help if you stated what you are ftting the alertnator too, your boat ? Lawn mower or your patrol. Which engine is it running, tb td or rb ?
Maybe a picture of the engine bay would help things along too that way people may be able to suggest something you had'nt though off.
The more info the more helpful the response.

Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

hi all
sorry, obviously more info would help.
its a 1992 mavrick, 4.2 diesel, nonturbo. but would like to turbo later. it has dural batteries, so space is a little tight, its running the precleaner aswell as the plumbing from it. i have endless air installed under the p/s pump. i wasthinking of using a vaccum pump, and mounting it somewhere therefore allowing me to use any alternator., but i think im still guna run into the same probs.
cheers

depends on how many lights you have running for instance i have 4 100w highbeam lights all up it draws around 34 amps alone..rumpig89 wrote:there are up to 120AMP alternators about bolt on replacement... personally i cant see where u could be using more then that - i have been wrong once before tho
just saying this as i had to tell the auto leccy i got to order mine that they existed after being told 65 is the biggest...
then you need to think about the things running in the car.. fridges stereo.. maybe he has an amp as he likes good sound quality.. just because you spit loads between two batteries doesnt mean the std alt can keep up with charging.. there is also all the electrics in car alot of people run inverters for laptops with navigation.. all this adds up quite quickly.. you also need to think about winches say at night when you need your lights to see still whilst winching..
i added up all the things i usually use in my car the other week and was shocked i only had something like 10 amps left for the rest of the car.. granted i am not using lights all the time but still i do alot of night driving..
higher output alt cost alot due to the vac pump being on the back.. i reackon its cheaper just to put a commo alt in as a second alt..
maybe the second alt could be mounted between the std alt and air cond??? i havent looked there myself but am thinking of mounting something there..
Correctausoops wrote:would that mean to change a belt you need to disconnect the rad hose?turps wrote:The patrols with a 24v alt fitted as well as the 12v have had them mounted above the std 12v alt. The belt is shared with the factory 12v and passes over the top of the rediator hose.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
