Has this problem only just started on a newly installed radio, or has it recently started on an existing install?

Typically, "accessories" turn off during cranking, to minimise the load on the battery. If both "permanent" power and "accessories" power have been connected to a source which turns off during cranking this would explain the problem.

Alternatively, if the battery is getting old, and the battery is struggling, the battery voltage is dropping low enough for long enough for the radio to lose its memory.

exact thing was happening to my sisters Rav4 when we bought it.
Problem was batt was too small, so when starting the voltage dropped low enough for radio to lose memory.
New bat and all was good.

To see if its the battery, start it with it hooked up to a second vehicle like when jump starting.

yeah has done it since fella bought the hilux, i firstly thought the battery was shit and dropping low enough to cut out the memory fed by the constant 12v. When he told me about the problem at first he said it losing the stations each time i turn it on and i thought it was the acc and the constant around the wrong way but after i put it back together it was fine and then he said no it loses them when i start it and i was like f8ck would have helped to know that before i put it all back together... oh well i'll put a meter on that constant 12 and turn it over next time to see what it does on starting. but its a crap tape deck anyway "fujitsu ten" brand ahah told him to buy a cd player and i'll sus it out further when i put it in.

if the acc and the memory wire are right, then as the other guys have said...battery is on the fritz. check the terminals on the battery too, if they are coroded, that'll be no good.

The acc wire connected to the unit is loosing power at time of starting.
Find a different acc wire in the loom. The one you have selected at the
moment is part of a system which is shut down when cranking.

I had a customer with the same problem. We chased the wiring to the
unit and battery. It turned out the acc wire selected by the previous
(mechaic) was part of a system which shut down on cranking.

i think you meant to say they 12v or memory wire (yellow wire).
if that loses power at start, it forgets it's memory.
the red (acc wire) loses power as it's the switched wire when you turn your car off. it'll always, no matter what car, switch off at start. ;)
