Not sure what the correct term is. But ive got diff oil coming out through the big seal on on the end of the axle housing. Is the problem the big seal or an internal axle seal.
Its only on the roght hand side, if anyone has has a sprare correct seal happy to buy it

Mate the situation was that I had a bloke swap the complete front end over as my one had big problems, he assured me he replaced the inner axle seals. Ive had few doubts about that.
You have remove the swivel pins dont you to remove the axle and replace the seal.
Do you know if you can buy just the one inner axle seal

you can get the inner axel oil seal from Repco, just did mine recently, $12 each.
to get to the seal you need to remove the manual free wheeling hub (or auto's if you have them) the wheel bearings, the brake's the rotor and hub then the stub axel, this gives you access to the CV joint, pull it out and then you will see he axel oil seal in the diff tube
also since you have oil leaking out, make sure you re-grease you CV and it may have washed the LMM grease out and if you don't re-pack it you will blow a CV, thats what i did :(

If you go to the trouble of pulling everything off to get to the axle seal it would be a good idea to replace all the seals in the swivel housing at the same time. If you buy a swivel housing seal kit it will come with all the seals including the axle seals, swivel housing bearings and you can get the kit for as little as $135 as i just did. Better to have it apart once properly now then do half now and the rest in a few months.
Isn't it amazing how prices vary so much on parts, etc.

outer axle seal
I've replaced these seals twice and again on one side yesterday after blowing a cv. I'm guna say it, they all leak, CBC, BSC Motion Tech, REPCO, NISSAN, they have all leaked on me, making the grease a runny slop. My old MQ of 8 years back had inner axle seals but the GQ wagon runs oil in the axle it's self. I don't think this problem can be fixed.
Has any one seen an alternate seal with a feather edge instead of the multi ridge type????

What do you mean by this? Axles are solid steel

A slightly bent diff will also cause your inner axle seals to leak no matter what seals you use, Thats not to say they wont seal at first but after a decent 4wd with the front axles turning they tend to wear out very quickly. So just be wary if you tend to get drunk and jump your rig or are buying a 4WD off a young bloke with leaking axle seals.
I have this problem two.
Fitted a new seal and speedy sleave, drove 2500hrs on the road, parked it up for 2 weeks no leaks. Take it out in the sand dunes for a run 150km park it up and the inner seal is leaking again.
If the diff is beat slighty how can you tell when the bent is and fit it?

I had a similar problem with the seals on the front diff on my MQ. On the MQ they are located at the diff head. Changing the seal made no difference. When I looked closely at the axle I found the seal had worn a slight groove in the axle surface. Fitted a speedi-sleeve about 3 years ago and have had no problems since. It was on the long axle side.
Before blaming seals have a good look at the axle first. It does not take much of a groove for the seal to leak

Be sure your steering limits are set correctly, mine kept leaking after a month after changing twice. Ended up finding that the steering limit was too far to the left and the cv would pinch the inner axle seal. adjusted the steering, put a new seal in and it hasn't leaked since.johno wrote:Not sure what the correct term is. This has recently been discussed, search.
Most often the axle housing outer seat where the inner axle seal goes is damaged/scored by a seal puller, or the new seal is damaged on installation, usually by pushing down on the seal with the axle while reinstalling the axle into the diff centre.
The other most common is the swivel hub shims are the wrong thicknesses between top and bottom and so the axle isn't centered through the seal and rest of the hub.
Doesn't really matter what brand inner seals are used (although I think the genuine ones are the best quality and only about $13)
