Buying a td42 New? 2nd hand motor Pricing?$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Post by Bingham »

Work mate also has a 3.0L and is over it and keen to do the switch. I have not followed pricing to closely only that its nearly worth buying a new one these days over a high km 2nd hand one?

Anyone got ball parlpricing or accurate reasnobly upto date pricing i can pass onto him please or if by chance you know anyone that has a 2nd hand one lieing about?

What did we say the group buys on 3L'swere $6700. Surely 4.2 would be 5 ish?

And would it best best to buy non turbo or with fatcory dollars wise..

any help appreciated

tried searching but either i am blind which is likely or it well hidden.

better to be factory turbo motor withintercooler, much stronger than non turbo

I have seen on here guys removing there td42 with turbo and intercooler i think some guys were chasing around 6 - 8k complete.

td42 motor from nissan new is about 6k but no pump injectors just a long motor, so you still need turbo and what not.

You sure about that?, isnt it just the spacer for the dualmass on the zd30 thats different, at most the bellhousing?

my work mates care is manual i am pretty sure so i was under the impression the box could be used with minor adaption.

So if your talking 6K + Then add what $1000? in random bits then turbo $3000 if aftermarket. So starting at 10K plus fitting which i think he will do himself.

anyone bought new one with factory turbo?

$1000 wont get you a pump, injectors, and everything else... Pump I thought was $2000 for reco - thats if you supply it.

In all honesty, it maybe worth selling and startin again.

Im up for being corrected, I was under the im,pression they were a weaker box. Maybe they bolt up but not as strong?

I had heard this from a few sources, and not to believe everything you read in 4wdaction, but i just read it there too!

$$$ wise, if you dont sell and start again with a 4.2, it would be worthwhile hanging for a td42 that comes up for sale. IF one comes up for sale.

Gearbox's on the ZD30 are the same. I can guarantee that. The bellhousing has an alloy spacer fitted, that's it.

You are confused with the RB30 GQ's and RD28 diesel GU's that have the weaker box.

this was about to be my question having just read 11ty5million posts on here and patrol forum..

So your 110% sure All 3L gu manual gearboxes are the same as the gu manule box for the 4.2 diesel ? guarantee it as in bet your house on it or $10 on it?

just yarned with work mate and he is pretty handy on the tools and a 2nd hand motor box and all the bits seems the best option. & once has come up that he shall look at ;) If can buy it all at a fair price and get a few dollars for current bits just putting in some time then its worth it . if paying somewon to do it i would say possibly not..

i pressume the engine mounts will need to be altered.
what else? am not massivelly mechancically capable or handy with fabrication but the guy i speak of is. So chasing a concise list if possible as all other threads all over the shop and 12 different opinions on yes or no questions so am a bit confused.

shall look further but obviously if we can get one with everything then life will be allot simpler.

doesnt the 3l have stronger diffs then the 4.2s aswell anyway.. and i say go ahead and convert.. a low km td42 gu still costs a fortune for what you would get back on a 3l its not really worth it then you have the ease knowing that the motor is fresh(if you buy a crate one)

Wasn't there a place selling Jap import TD42T's with about 40 000k's on them for about $6500-7000?

Surely they'd have to be a good option?

Gudday fellas

GU has a stronger 5th gear, stronger CV's among other things.....

As for wiring, if you want the engine to preform remove all the emission sh1t off it, that alone simplifies the engine bay and removes the need for alot of wiring, solenoids, hoses, switches, temp senders, pipes, inlet heaters etc etc

To make a TD42T run you need very little wiring, its the monitoring that may cause you to scratch your head i.e. tacho mods.

This it true, as i have done a zd30 to 4.2 conversion, HOWEVER the bolt pattern for the starter motor is different, you can get around this to ways,
1. drill and tap the bell housing for the 4.2 starter motor. (This is what i did)
2. Buy a TD42 bell housing and bolt it to your gear box.

You will require all new bolts too as the 3L bolts will be too long.

some good info their lads.

from what i can gather and to minimise downs time which is what was his concern,

My suggestion for him will be for him to make as easy as possible would be to purchase the turbo'd motor that might be coming up in next 2 months with similar kms to the current motor. Will come with all wiring engine mounts blah blah etc etc.

what is a 3L with 190 km on it worth to sell with gear box ball park?

as said othewise it potenitally will become a A) a misson B) A Time Waster c) Not worth it financially and yes be better to pull of bits sell and try track a 4.2 down. Obvious problem being the wagon pricings having climbed which makes the gap (is it worth it) closer.
