installing a TB42
installing a TB42
My mate just blew a hole in the side of his block in a TB42 patrol and is very short on cash. How hard is it to replace the engine with another TB42 but with the EFI stuff on it. The idea is to buy a good TB42e and rip off all the efi stuff and put his carbi and lpg mixer back on. Also what price should i pay for a second hand engine, already i got a few prices ranging from $1750 - $2000. and around $1k for installation. If the installation is not that hard i would like to give it a go and if i cant do it tow it to the mechanics, cant lose right?
giv the old man a call Andy,
the tb's are a dinosoar, just like him! there's nothing to fancy to them..
Jonh up the back has an engine crane so we would be able to do it up in the back shed.
i probably wouldnt pay more than 1k for an engine though.., i sold my tb45 bare block for $500!

A speed camera would have prevented that!
thanks guys, just what i wanted to hear. Going to rip the engine out next weekend. Now to find a good second hand TB42. How do i know how good the engine is if its already out of the car? Can you still do a compression test. Im pretty sure you still can. Also should i rip the head off the new engine to see if there is any cracks or water damage?
Its really hard to see any physical damage to a head. You may not see a hairline crack. It really needs to be taken in for a pressure test.
TB42 engines are pretty much bullet proof except for the head cracks and valve regression from long term LPG usage. I think if you got the head tested you should be pretty much right. If its done less than 200,000km and never been on LPG you should be on a winner! Make sure you always run good oil. I use Penrite - I have found this to be really good oil.
