Vitara 1.6L 16v motor power / Auto conversion

Just would like to know the types of mods done to a vitara 1.6L and the power gained?
What power does your motor produce?
How is the best way to run a auto with transfer gears, eg would I use a vitara auto transfer or a sierra transfer?

most who are running the EFI 1.6 are just running it "as is" - as theyre a rock solid setup. Theres a few running a supercharger, but as far as im aware none are running an auto box with a 1.6.

If you wanted auto, go the zuk v6 conversion =D

Yes allready looked at the V6's;
vitara 2.0L 4cyl = 94kw
2.5L V6 = 116kw
2.7L V6 = 135kw where the 1.3 sierra motor is 47kw

but if I do a late model vitara motor and auto what type of electrical issues will I find, does the auto change gears electronicaly or manuel like a t700?
And I can only get 4.2:1 reducion gears for a GV transfer where as I can get 6.5:1 in a sierra transfer.

Is it possible to remove the GV transfer and than use a sierra transfer?

I've built a trimatic auto/1.6 baleno car, I'm helping convert a carby 1.6/trimatic into a WT atm, and have helped build a G13BB/Jimny 4 speed auto sierra.

There's enough power in a MPFI 1.6 vitara engine to run an auto and pretty much any tire size you want. The trimatic/baleno car I built runs Q78 swampers (35.5") and drives very nicely on the road. That's with 6.5 transfer gears and 3.9 diffs.

Maxtrax, you haven't taken all the issues into account relating to gearing. sure you could put a 4 speed auto in with a vitara transfer and 4.24 transfer grears, but even with 5.12 diff gears, you won't have enough gearing for a decent tyre size because the vitara has a a direct high range, unlike a sierra. when you add transfer gears to a vitara, it still has a direct high range, but when you gear a sierra transfer, the high range is also geared down, which, along with vitara diff gears, allows for lots of gearing choices for even very large tyres.

Also, a vitara transfer case has slip yokes front and rear (not really designed to work with a leaf spring suspension, so you'll need to lock them up, Trail tough sells a kit) and a centered rear output, that's quite high up compared to a sierra transfer case, meaning in a SWB sierra rear driveshaft issues will be a problem.

PErsonally, I'd run a 1.6 vitara, baleno or GV engine (GV is the best option) and a trimatic auto for the easiest conversion. The 4 speed auto is a much better auto, but it is much harder to fit. It's longer (by about 140mm) than the trimatic, making the 4 speed much harder to fit into a SWB, and is 100% electronically shifted, meaning you will need a vitara TCC to make it shift, or some amount of electronic control you either buy or wire yourself.

There are some gains to be made with 1.6 MPFI motors with cams, can phasing, exhaust etc, and the SOHC 16V cylinder head flows very well, but really, that's defeating the purpose of an EFI swap a bit IMHO (and the gains aren't massive - mostly it's moving the powerband around a bit)- part of the beauty of an EFI swap is you don't have to mess around with the motor - you put it in and it works, pretty much as well as it possibly could.

I used the trail tough kit to install the vitara 4sp auto in a 413 ( yes it was expensive but we were in a rush to get it completed ) It bolted in nicely and we did not have to stuff around with new drive shafts etc as it retains the 413 t/case . Also at a later date we could stick the vitara t/case back on there and chuck other diffs under there when it goes up a class .

When you speak of fitting a trimatic auto behind the 1.6L bv motor do you mean the holden trimatic box?
The build is for a unrego car/buggy hilux or patrol 4.8-5.12 diffs and air shocks, hydro steerand 40" tyres. I have seen that the sierra gears do reduce the high range gears to but in saying this I don't think I will use high range often am hoping to maintain the sierra transfer.
Is the 1.6L the same as the 2.0L as this power output (94kw) is just nice by the time I turbo it, around 115-130kw and a all alloy motor.
I already have a piazza 2L turbo and gemini trimatic box about 120kw but is alloy head and cast bottom end so heavier than the vit motor.
The build you did if I understand correctly has a 1.6L vitara motor to holden trimatic to sierra transfer.

pull the tcase off and put THIS in the end of the auto then followed by you sierra jackshaft then the tcase

all to easy thats the setup i am running in the new buggy and it goes really good

There is a cheaper way. Just use part of the Vit t-case and swap the bearing and seal ;)

...and you don't need electronics to control the auto - just some simple wiring works very well. IMHO its actually way better to control the auto by switches - change up or down whenever you want. :cool:

buy a 16 valve 1.6 vit. motor n 4 speed auto out of an import n the harness n computers. remove the transfer then remove the 1 inch adapter betweeh the auto n transfer n get a manual suzuki output snout off a box machined 2 fit in seal hole then tig in there then a sierra jacjsharft fits the bach of the auto so u can shorten it 2 fit to a sierra transfer n same as if u have a vitara 3 speed

for a loom moded just to power a manual is about $300 and a turn around of 4 days.

a loom to run the electronic auto is $400 with a turnaround of about 7 days.

there are about 8 or so wires that need to be run/ spliced on the original vehicle and these are all marked as to where they have to go. hooking up the check engine circuit and or auto lights is also included for the sierra cluster. buy the time i'm done with it it should only take a day to install.
