hilux ratios
hey guys just after some input on diff gears. i have a 96 2.8 lux i have 35inch silverstone extremes to run off road and i was going to try stick with 31's thru the week on the black top.
i was just wondering what the best diff ratio would be to run with.
i was thinking 4.88 but i dont no about that with 31's? can anyone tell me will i still get 100km on the motorway with 31's and 4.88's
or am i better to go to a 33inch tyre for daily driving

im currently running 4.3(i think) ratios on my lux and ive got 35s, goes as well as a 2.4d lux does. im going to upgrade centres to 4.8s soon.
it doesnt like hills at all, unless its in lowrange.
ive got a mate that runs 35s on his 2.8d lux and 4.3 ratios, he says the speedo is out by about 10kms on freeway, he just uses his navman thing for correct speed.
i think from what ive read here, if you are running 35s or plan to run 35s, then you should be upgrading diff centres to 4.8 ratios. they will give you better throttle control at low speed.
someone could correct me if im wrong, as ive been wrong before

If your running 31's on road keep your diff ratios as is and get reduction gears for your transfer low range assuming you will be in low range most of the time with the 35's, and its a lot cheaper than doing diff gears.
That's all I've done with mine i run 35's all the time but and it goes fine on road and really well off road with the 4.7 transfer gears

Do u reckon its really worth going from 4.3 to 4.5 i could never justify the money for the hardly noticable improvement...Willy Hilux wrote:With the 2.8L running 35's go from 4.3's to 4.8's is a good swap. Will fix the speedo pretty and will help it pull better. with 31's it might be a bit revvy. maybe go 4.5's......

4.88 with 31's are not too bad but you will rev 15% more than you do now to do the same speed. annoying if you do 100 or more regularly.
From memory it was a bit like not having 5th gear, and driving on the hwy in 4th. lots of torque but noisy.
I had 4.88's for a brief while but decided to stick with 4.3's as i only run 33's offroad.
4.5's isnt worth the effort, not low enough or high enough to justify any real benefit to either wheel set for the money.
4.88's are weaker gears than 4.3's but you will tend to brake other stuff first with 35's anyway. although the truck i got with 4.88's and 35's did have cracked teeth (and also arrived minus a cv ).
just do the transfer gears i reckon.
*there's a rock, drive over it :) there's a bigger rock, drive over it  there's an even bigger rock, oops broke it  Upgrade broken bit :bad-words:

Not really, but I'm not the one doing it. I was just giving a comment. But if ya selling ya 4.3 cheap, I might take one.4RUNNER_01 wrote:If your running 31's on road keep your diff ratios as is and get reduction gears for your transfer low range assuming you will be in low range most of the time with the 35's, and its a lot cheaper than doing diff gears.

Mate a 2.4D has 4.5 ratios, going to a 4.88 ratio will still make it sluggish on the road if your going to run 35s as daily's.
The petty has 4.8 as standard and that is what i have.
All depends, big tyres and stock ratios means sluggish to take off but higher top speed and better for cruising.
Big tyres and big ratio diffs means it all goes back to stock.
33s on road with 4.88 ratios in your diesel will just mean that it wont like going the speeds that the 31s with 4.3 ratios used to go.
Cheers

just digging this thread back up.
i am about to go out in the shed and strip the diffs out of both hiluxes. One has 4.88s with air lockers and i will be pulling the 4.3s out of my 2.8 lux.I run 32" tyres at the moment but wouldnt mind running a 33 or 35 soon if i can sell my 32" simex's and 32" bighorns etc.
My question is should i just install the 4.8s as they are or do the swap and get the ARBs set up in my current diffs? It is non turbod and i dont want it to be much worse than it already is.Would a set of 33s make it anygood, definately would have good gearing in the bush
thanks heaps

sierra truggy,37 sticky treps,propane,6.5s and disconnect,lux diffs with spools,16" fox shox,hydro steer.
thanks for the tip mate.Well have both jacked up at the moment with rear centres out, both look to be in really good nik n so on so ill be swapping the 4.8s in as they are for now and will chase up some 33s n 35s to decide where i go from there.
Then better go 3rz or absolute minimum of a turbo for mine haha
