60 series no power

Post by RED »

My 60 last night wouldn't deliver any power when I turned the key. There's plenty of juice in the battery, but no accessories. I left it overnight and when I went to leave work today, put the key in, and had accessories, until I went to start, then I had no power for anything again. I had a squiz under the bonnet and pulled the cover off the steering column, but no loose or dodgy wires obvious. I left multimeter at home (silly me) but going back to work tommorrow to look more.

I pulled a few fuses, but all were fine.

My guess is maybe something to do with the ignition barrell, but if anyone has experienced this problem and knows or has an educated guesstimation, please put forward ideas so I can focus my efforts. The mrs is working both mornings of the weekend and I have the girls and cannot take to my work so I have 2 arvos only.

Cheers

How do you know there is plenty of juice in the battery?

Just because it has 12.6V sitting there there doesn't mean it has the amps to crank.

Can you hear the starter pinion spinning or is there just nothing at all?

Sounds like loose and or corroded battery terminals. tried jumpstarting it? battery could be stuffed.

Not sure about the ign. barrel. when you loose power do you loose the constant power for the settings to the radio?

Battery is about a year old. I had some loose wire in the car and just did a quick tap between terminals, resulting in a rather obvious and big spark, also a small bit of melted terminal where wire was brushed across. As good a boot as I've ever seen.

Battery terminals, while old, looked in working order. I gave them a good going over when swapping battery out a year ago. None of that scum build up over terminals

Yes, everything reset. Clock, radio, back to factory default or 1:00 on clock when I did get power back on accessories before trying to start

next time try your head lights while starting do they completely drop off or stay bright

if the stay bright then something to do with ignition switch (not likely due to the fact all youy clocks etc went to default)
if they go out then you have a battery / terminal problem

you may still clean the terminals and have the problem
you need a multi meter put it directly into the lead on the top of the terminal
if the voltage appears good then when u go to start or turn the key on and it drops below 7 volts then you may have a cracked cell inside the battery
this can be hard to diagnose as some times they work again on their own for a while then go bad again
