how much horse power can gq running gear take??

hey im just rebuilding another 454 big block for my gq lwb, just wondering how the running gear will go? the engine will be around 550hp & around 700ft/ torqe, just wondering how much they can take before a big bang??

was a tb42 with a 5 speed box!!

cass runs all standard gear in his 6L turbo race/winch challenge rig.

Dunno on the power but id say its close to 700hp+

Yep.
I reckon it should be pretty good

We run 550+HP out of a turbo TB42 with a manual and stock running gear... just has ARB lockers at both ends (aftermarket carriers) and genuine gears.
Hasn't broken anything yet however has toasted an aftermarket clutch.

Does mostly high speed comps such as Coopers Rally, Gymkana work etc.

Spend the cash on a decent clutch or convert to an auto. Auto will be softer on diff, transfer etc as you aren't shock loading them so much...

but I say wack it in and enjoy!

With a 302 windsor I was smashing a CV joint every stage. Have upgraded to a GU front and it has been all good.

Been running mine with 375rwhp on 35" Simex and had no drama apart from the obvious cv weakness. Tat is with Patrol auto as well but it had been tweaked a bit.

Andrew Casser used to smash the input shafts on the gearboxs. Think that was around the 250rwkw mark. But that was max revs slide foot of clutch, type of work I think.

used to run a 383 holden v8 in the BIL's auto GQ running 37s, was pushing close to 300kw if i remember correctly...only mod he had was a high stall kit in the auto...broke the engine before we broke the car!

For a true indication you would need horsepower, tyre size and use of vehicle. Ive seen GQ diffs blown apart in tiny, underpowered comp buggies.

Which on a GQ with 37's would equate to around 530 to 560 flywheel.

thats pretty serious horsepower, but on the street it could handle it all day long.

gearing, torque, man id run the 454 if these other guys are having no problems.

thanks for the replys guys, the engine should be done early next year but i just blew a rear diff centre today coming home from work

so im not to convinced anymore haha & its only around 450hp

get airlockers, or at least a full spool cradle to stiffen up the rear, or even go to the H260B (The big GU diff)

I would put 600hp and 1000ft lb through a GQ or GU with right clutch, good gearbox oil, and the right engine mounts, and expect it to survive.

Using the extra horses does mean feeding them, and the extra wear and tear they can create though

Mcloed make a range called "workhorse" and we put one recently to a 440kw and 1000nm 512 c.i in a cruiser running 38's, which stands up well.
