GQ diff pinoin? same front & rear or???

Post by gq351 »

hey guys just blew up my rear diff today  & ive got a good front centre at home & a rear centre that i sheered off the end of the pinion a while back,
just wondering could i use just the pinion out of the front centre & put it in the rear centre as the rest of the rear is perfect??
looks identical in the workshop manual, just wondering if anyone has done it??
thanks jess :-)

The front is RR, and the rear is SR. The teeth are totally different.

because the front is high pinion the gears are reverse cut, so the two wont mesh at all. Also gears are sold as a set as they are lapped together, taking a mismatched pair, you MAY get a half decent contact pattern but chances are you won't. you will also need to shim the pinion etc to set the pinion depth in the new housing. so short answer is no, you can however get second hand third members complete for gq's for a few hundred around the traps, probably a better option if you have never worked with setting up diff's before.
