Options for replacing GQ TD42 alternator?
Options for replacing GQ TD42 alternator?
Pulled the alternator out to see why the vacuum pump is not creating vacuum and the spines which drive the vacuum pump are stripped as is the pump rotor.
I've got a feeling rebuilding is not an option. It will need new shaft and pump rotor.
Anyone replaced a diesel alternator recently? Where would I get the best deal.

They are can be difficult to find in Wreckers. When buying the rotor from Nissan, the complete wound rotor is about $350 i think when i last brought mine. There has been previous posts about a place in QLD that sells higher output TD42 Alternators--they do have a web site. Probably cheaper to get one from there instead.
I'm suprised that the splines are stripped. Has the pump run dry of oil, as the vanes depend on an oil feed from the engine for correct lube.

I was surprised it had stripped the splines as well. I dont think it has run dry as it was well oiled when I pulled it apart. I've only had the GQ for 6000 km and am not sure what the history of the alternator is. Its done 275 000 and a wrecker quoted me $275 plus I have to give him my old one. So the same thing might happen to the one from the wrecker as well.
Will talk to some auto electricians tomorrow and am waiting for Auto Electrics Australia (the online place) to get back to me with a quote.

I've re-built my alternator almost 6 times--over that time i've replaced every internal component EXCEPT the vacuum pump. Most of the problems i've had with mine have been electronic with some mechanical. While they are a crappy alternator as far as being able to 'handle abuse' is concerned, i've never heard of them stripping the vacuum pump splines. Maybe a sloppy rear bearing contributed to the problem? Its been fault free for the last year and a bit though

Funny to see this thread as my alternator siezed friday night
New nissan alt is $900.
Chek out Auto electrics Australia (07) 3277 4566. <www.aea.com.au> they sell a new replacement hitachi alt with vacume pump that is rated at 70 amps (std is 60) that suposedly bolts in for $456. Part No ALT 7055
They also sell a 110 amp one that needs a bit of feet grinding to fit for about $50 bucks more than the 70 amp one. Part no. ALT 3110.
Apparently the 70 amp one charges lots at low rpm, more than the 110 at low revs.

I replaced my 100 amp for $350 from an importer. If you are in melbourne you can by direct and save. Otherwise he sells on Ebay under the name starterimporter. Comes with 12 mth warranty. The listed Nissan price for the Hitachi OE part was 1700.

It may sound silly but I baught a brand new Chinese alt for 250 bucks and it's perfect and hasn't skilled a beat and charges both my batteries really well and it was nearly identical to the stock unit asside from a different vacuum outlet which I just swapped with the old one. Don't be scared to buy Chinese, some of it's good.

Hi mate, that is for a 70amp unit? did you say that he does 100amp units too?? regardless that is a great price for a standard one though. I would prefeer to upgrade to a bigger output though... any info on the big one would be great? or just the same guy?1TUFFGQ wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Nissan-Navar ... _927wt_941
