gq airbox and IC.

Post by jbates58 »

hi all

i have searched around about changing the airbox on my gq, and it has been suggested to install a zd30 box, or one from a 80's series. whats the better option? i am looking to do this, so that i have a neater engine bay (well i think it will look neater neway) but i also have a dual batt setup, and i dont realy want to have 2 move it further back. so will either of thease boxes fit straight in to where the pre-cleaner box is currently? (i think thats where they go) i am also looking at installing another alternator above the factory one on the holidays, to help with charging, so the plumbing will need to be routed around it. also, i have been wondering, is there anypoint to installing an intercooler to a non-turbo 4.2 diesel? i have noticed a re-markable performance increase when driving at night, when the air is cooler, so i am wondering if it is worth installing an IC? i do plan on turboing the engine in another 50-100K though, so it wil still be IC'd.

cheers

Hi mate, there is no point installing an IC onto a non Turboed engine.. The idea of the IC is to cool the air that the Turbo is pumping under pressure into the engine. The Turbo functions directly from the Exhaust gas and therefore heats the air that it pumps back into the engine. Without the turbo the air going into the engine is straight down your snorkel and is ambient, goes through your air filter and into your engine. It is the pre-heated air off the turbo that the IC is trying to cool as the heat causes a loss of power and also forces the engine to run hotter as the air in is hotter.

I am in the middle of an airbox mod at the moment to fit an IC. i have looked at the 3lt and the 4.5lt and the 80 series air box and they would alll require the second battery to be relocated to fit. This is not practical for me.

I have opted to customise the prefilter and it seems to be coming together well. Ned to get it on the dyno but i am confident that the maths is right.

I have removed the prefillter box in the gq, cut the rivets off the bottom plate and hose and removed this. I have then gone to the auto shop and bought a 3' adaptor that i have bolted to the bottom and some 3' flexi hose. It needs a little panel beating to the inner guard in front of the second battery but will go in. I have then installed a GU TD42T K&N filter and added a fin to the intake to direct the air around the box a little better, Looking good so far.

Most of the idea of changing the air filter on the gq when fitting the IC is that it is mounted on top and is in the way if you go a top mounted IC. If you go a front Mounted then it does not matter and sticvk with what is there.

The limitation for running the GQ pre filter as the main filter is that the prefilter is not suitable, but a GU filter goes straight in.

The other limitation is the air flow. The pre filter as a restricted airflow out the bottom of the box. make it bigger ans let is breathe and your deisel will love you. The Turbo will work.

Hope this helps. Hope it bloody works mate!! Mine is nearly finished, need to take some pics.
