oil pressure problem 2.8L diesel hilux

Post by islandvitara »

hi all, im looking into buying a hilux 89/99 model. one have found is a mate of miine and he told me it has an oil problem.

when the engine gets up to operating temp, the oil pressure drops when you get off the throttle - gotta rev it to bring it back up again...

what would be causing this? could it be multiple problems? apprently it could be a faulty oil pump? or internal leak?

i know nothing about toyota's hence comming from the suzuki section...

cheers

Could be a thousand things but one common problem with the 2.8 is wear of the number 4 big end if incorrect grade of oil is used or not changed every 5000 km. This is a possibility that when the oil gets hot it gets thinner and pushes out the sides of the beaaring journal reducing pressure.
Now this is all dooms day stuff and may not even be the case but with an oil issue I would assume to have to replace the engine when you consider the price. A reco exchange 5L (2.8) is around $3500 and up.

So I made a typo the price still stands and the engine prob is that of the 3L just hope its not big end related but either way with an oil problem I would be factoring in a possible engine in the purchase price.

wasnt trying to show you up, just thought id put it in there so if he did try find prices for a new donk he wasnt looking for the wrong engine.

for his sake i hope he doesnt have to get a new engine, cost me the best part of 5g for a new engine installed..

Its OK I didnt take it that way at all I laughed myself when your post made me taje a double take. Thats the trouble with forums with the words alone you sometimes cant tell the mood of the other person. If it were me Id look for a discount and maybe ask if you can do an oil pressure test maybe the sender goes alittle off beat when it heats up it might have great pressure but its sure something you'd want to get sorted sooner rather than later. Cheers

Are you using the sr5 oil pressure gauge, or a calibrated screw into the block type, and what are the pressures at idle, and at 3000rpm.

they should be for a DIESEL 3L 2.8ltr

idle. more than 30kpa
3000 294 to 539kpa.

Let us know if there within those specs.
