Howdy People,
I am back in the market for a 4x4 after 2 1/2 yrs without one. Had to sell my XJ Jeep after my 1st son was born and now that hes old enough to take a hit offroad .. i want to get something practical with offroad capability.
My budget is tight as I another car and a bike that i need to keep. So I am looking at 9k max, want to keep it in the mid 8k mark to give me room.
Iam considering;
* Hilux 2.8TD
* Hilux 4Runner ( I owned one with the 3y gutless !)
* GQ Patrol/Maverick
* 80 Series
I want to be able to atleast drive around NSW and be practical enough to tow if needed and have room store crap.
I also want to hit the trails again .. tracks like, Menai, Bargo, Appin etc etc.
Any suggestions ?? or new idea's ??
Cheers !

I would highly recomend the Patrol/Maverick for comfort and plus you will get more "Bang for your buck" cruisers are fine but expensive.
Hilux and 4runners are not as comfortable and less power as either of the above choices.
just my 2c

98 DX Patrol; bullbar factory, Ox/T-max 10000lbs winch, 3"lift Tjm, Outback draws, Waeco 50l, cargo barrier,240, Ibs battery kit, tow bar, solar panel 80w, roofrack, awning, shovel, sh*t paper
No I belive they only came out in the 4.2l petrol or diesel other than that not much, Maverick is equal to ST in Patrol elec windows ect.

For that price there is heaps you could look at. Gq would obiously be the best choice, you should even have enough change to get a lift and good tyres or even a winch or locker. Then there is the option of a landcruiser bundera or something similar so on and so forth. But as far as comfort, off road ability etc you really cant look past a gq.
Jabber gone. Now have 98 nissan terrano and a 94 4.2ldiesel rv troopy on 33s slowly getting the fancy bits. How the hell do I change my user name?
80 series... just a better build and car for the $$$
little things like 17mm bush bolts instead of the 14mm ones nissan used all comes to mind
there is a reason they are more expensive.... not just brand loyalty

nice looking truck .. just a little worried about the 351 up front ill give u ca ll anyway.not stock wrote:I have my mav in the forsale section. I'll take the winch off and uhf out and you can have it for $9,000 .But I won't go below $9,000.
The zook is not practical .. the 80 Series is a bit more expensive and the Disco (although a very good car) may also be expensive for parts.
Iam going to narrow it down to the GQ and maybe a Hilux with a 3.8L engine .. i wanted to do this to my 4Runner some 5 yrs ago but was wayy to expensive.

Too much lift (3"+2"+35's = no RWC), carby 4.2L petrol is not the most refined motor around either. I'd hold out for at least a 4.2L EFI if you aren't keen on waiting for a 4.2L diesel.OzTeXs wrote:this looks quite good .. http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/pri ... A079B26240
any advise please ?

Can anybody confirm the maximum lift for NSW roadworthiness? I thought it was 2" or 3" total.

Not at all .. Iam learning about the GQs and i thought that was good advise.
What would you say about a injected 3.0L GQ ?

guys thanks for your help so far ..
a forum member (not stock) has enticed me with his Maverick, which can be seen <here>http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic195385.php
It's 92 Maverick with a 351 up front. It's a nice capable offroader, but iam not sure of its practicality with the Gased V8.
Any feedback please ???

I would realy look at diesel powered, as the fuel consumption is outragous in any petrol vehicle that weighs nearly 3t. I had a 4.5l petrol and a 4.2l petrol 'cruiaer and troll now I have been converted to a diesel one and wont go back. Plus parts are plentiful where as if it isn't the engine from that vehicle parts can be difficult as there are a few different years that the "351" came out so some parts could be slightly different to the first one you purchase and you might be stuck somewhere that you needed to order the parts in so there is a possibilty of longer down time than you may have planed for. just my 2c.
For the money you should find something nearl set up ready to go in a GQ but in a 80 series it will be nearly stock.

I'll also say Rangie Classic or Disco1. The parts are only a pain in the bum if it breaks and you need them right away. Otherwise order parts from England and they are cheap as dirt. Some Aussie sellers have reasonable prices and can post you anything you want next day.
For $9k you would have your pick of any RRC or Disco1 petrol or diesel.
Actually I prefer having my pick of places to order online from. Much easier than having to get to the parts place before it closes so they may even be quicker to get parts for.

ive only had petrol patrols apart from one and thats because i got it with 120k on the clock. in this price range like my others its a gamble getting a good diesel thats been maintained, serviced and not flogged. ive only got petrols cos if something does need replacing or rebuilding its cheap. i liked the power of the tb42 as well . GQs are the best priced and most capable/ reliable vehichle if you want to get into the hard stuff
a mate of mine has owned a few GU patrols. one was a 4.2 td and the other was an injected 6ltr chev. the chev was cheaper to run and had alot more tyre and lift to push about. It had the full snake racing 6in setup and 2in BL and was all engineered. awsome truck but a bit outside your price range by about $30K
