Can somebody help me out, what is the difference between a 215R15 tyre and a 215/75R15 :?:

Easy...

215 is the measurement accross the tyre (in mm)
R15 is the radius of the rim (in inches)
75 refers to the ratio of height vs width - in Percentage. therefore this tyre has a sidewall heigth of 215x0.75 = 161.25mm

The difference is - that the 215R15 must have a sidewall ratio measurement somewhere - but you just don't know what it is as yet - i.e. it could be a low profile tyre (215/25/R15) or it could be a tall profile tyre (215/85/R15).

Find out that ratio and you can work it all out - or, if you have the tyre in front of you - get a tape measure and measure from the rim to the tread and calculate an approximate ratio using that.

i always thought that if a tyre said 215R15 etc that it was assumed that the profile was 75 (the standard)

i may be wrong :roll:

I'm happy with that - sounds good.

I was just thinking that perhaps dark matter hadn't received all the info about the tyre?

But a standard of 75 suites me fine :cool:

My answer was correct :finger: And you can rely on me to post a smart alec response:D

But yes it is to do with profile height and yes a standard R15 tyre is a 75 profile.

Thanx for the help, the tyre only had 215R15 on it, and thats what had me wondering.

as a side note why with metric tyre measurements like 215/75R15 is the rim size still measured in inches. You never hear of a 381 mm rim instead of a 15". Be much more bling when someone says have you checked ot my new 18" rims. 18s ha I've got 381s

I thought it was 78 not 75... anyway it's only old 7.50R16's and crap like that off dodgy old split rim Landcruisers who use em anyway.
What's the point of putting a 75 on if 75 = R anyway??

The R is for radial, as in not a cross ply.
