big bore tough dogs shroud is broken. What to do?

Post by yamahasRsweet »

Well the black plastic shrouds have broke and crumpled up so am wondering if there is a soft rubber concertina shock boot (like the rancho ones) that is big enough to fit onto a big bore shock? Needs to to 70mm diameter to fit over the shock.
I have tryed all the 4x4 shops in town and they know of nothing also have tryed the ones they use on motorbike shocks but they aint big enough.

It is just one more story in the long saga of tough dog crap, everything tough dog sell is shit, and that comes from (unfortunately) owning their crap.
Lesson for us all here.

Its not really a tough dog fault, my front ones are still good. Its just when I was getting my suspension sorted the rear coil used to flop out and rest against the shock shroud and get caught up when flexing back down.

In my opinion just cut it off and leave it. I have 65mm boots but not 70mm, you can get another plastic one.

Boots do yes. I don't like boots for this reason. The only reason why companies use boots is because there isn't enough room to put a metal dust cover on the shock.

So you rekon its not necessary to run them? What about possible damage to the shock chrome shaft from rocks driving on dirt roads?

Possible but not very common. If you watch all the desert rock racing they don't have boots.

Where about did you get them from? I have tried quite a few places so far and none can get ones to suit 70mm OD.

get rid f the boots and put on some seal savers. Used to have them on my dirt bike. Its basically a bit of neoprene that acts like a wiper blade as the shocks compresses cleaning the shock piston/shaft as it does.

I never had any boots/shrouds on my TD big bores and haven't had an issue to date. Front and back that is. Leave them off.

I have never like that idea on bikes as it holds all the dust/mud in the fabric and just will wear the shaft out quicker, I always just clean and grease the dust seal very regualrly on my bike.

How long have you been running them with no shrouds? How much dirt road work have you done? Just that every weekend I drive dirt roads and my coils have rock chips all over them and am worried about rocks wrecking the shaft.
