Porsches, mini mokes, and mazda 929's have all been to the cape. I'm sure you'll make it so long as you pack light - the lighter the better. try and avoid roof load, and any heavy accessories. The more under GVM you are the better.

The Cape experience

Post by gravy »

Mate

Its like a walk in the park compared to 25 years ago. You dont have to ford the Jardine and there is bitumen as far as the Archer.

Unless your going to tackle it immediately after the wet 2WD will get you there for 50% of the trip. Ground clearance is the important factor, standard 4WD suspension will suffice.

Roof racks are usually the major tragedy, the garage at Coen makes a nice earner carrying out repairs. If you do use one pack it light and ensure its supported the full length of the roof gutter. Do a daily check of bracket security.

Ensure your free wheeling hubs are in good nick, I had to roadside repair several vehicles units to get them out of trouble.

I did the trip in 84, accompanied by 2 1983 Patrol Wagons, in a F75 Diahatsu Rocky we had no issues and visitted all off track sites and venues. All vehicles were stock standard. Only time we saw a winch used was by a group of guys in a 10 tonne truck getting out of the Wenlock.

Compared to the experience some mates endured 3 years prior to 84 we did it easy.

Dont travel alone, the best maintained vehicle can still fail. Allow yourself plenty of time 6 weeks is the minimum if you want to see everything that is available. Not sure how much is locked up these days because of the A hole factor destroying personal property and stock so it may be difficult to absorb that much time.

Enjoy
