80 series gxl power steering Fixed
ok so i rebuilt my power steering pump and replaced my steering box with a sahara steering box. now the problem is that the steering is heavy. what have or havent i done right. i think i have bled it correctly unless there are some special tricks for bleeding this. what else could i have done wrong. also if any one has pics or can tell me which ports on the steering box is the low and high pressure ports would be great.

has the steer box got a solenoid on the top of the box and the front port nearest to the steering arm (from steering wheel is input and output is the other

the hoses are different to what is on mine, mine has banjo fittings on the ends, they are around the right way as far as pressure and return though.
have you got it all wired up correctly?
The Sahara box is speed sensitive, and reduces assistance as the speed increases. Maybe something is wrong here?

yeah the sahara box came with banjos but the gxl thread is the same as the bajo thread. at the moment the solenoid is not wired up as i dont no if the gxl has the plug for the solenoid in the harness or if it only came in the sahara wiring. if i was to wire it up would a constant 12volts be fine or does it need a differnet signal.
I think your other problem with getting the Sahara steering working properly is not whether you have the plug for the soleniod but the trigger unit or ECU. I haven't looked but I would expect that Toyota uses a relay/ECU box to control the soleniod similar to what it does with the power antennae, diff locks etc etc. Unless you get all the bits I doubt it will work as it should. At best you may have to find a mid voltage setting and feed it that all the time. Not sure if it uses full 12 volts but if you feed it full voltage it may be super sensitive at highway speed which could be a little unnerving. So mid range voltage may make it more user friendly at both ends of the spectrum assuming that with no actuation it is not functioning as a GXL at least should.ledgend80 wrote:yeah the sahara box came with banjos but the gxl thread is the same as the bajo thread. at the moment the solenoid is not wired up as i dont no if the gxl has the plug for the solenoid in the harness or if it only came in the sahara wiring. if i was to wire it up would a constant 12volts be fine or does it need a differnet signal.

for the steering to work you need to give the solenoid 12v power but the steering will be very light at speed but to make it work properly you need the speed sensor on the gear box wiring and the ecu box to make it work

ok so i removed the sahara steering box and refitted the gxl box. still very hard to steer. so i removed the power steer pump blew out the lines and stripped the pump and rebuilt it again. refitted everything bled up system now you can steer on the spot. did get some help from a shop that said to bleed it you should turn the front tyres by hand instead of using the steering wheel then you can use the steering wheel top bleed it. only problem is the old gxl box is back in that leaks. oh well you get that. the sahara box could still work i think it was something with how i rebuilt the pump or something in the lines. anyway she is up and running again. thanks for all the help.
If you have a look at the flange the solinoid bolts to on the sahara box, ive been told that the fitting off a standard box will bolt on there. I havent confirmed it tho was just told when i was hunting a fix for my old steering box.
Other option is to wire in a pot to control how far to solinoid opens and therefore how easy the steering is.
The sahara boxes are terribly heavy when that solinoid isnt working
