2000-2003 3.0TD Jackaroos

Post by tritontray »

Hi,

I appologise in advance if this has been asked before, and also for the length of this post, but I only want to bother you all once! I also searched but didn't get the answers I wanted.

I'm looking to get a 2000-2003 Jack 3.0 TD. I have always seemed to shoot myself in the foot when buying second hand cars, thinking I am getting a good deal, then finding I can't get parts or servicing costs are way too much, the only place that will service my car is too far away etc etc etc....I am determined to not do this again. And in asking all the below questions, hopefully I can create one post that will answer loads of questions that can possibly be archived so others can search and actually get an answer.

I know they have problems that seem to be related to oil grades. And I know they have injector issues. Are there any others.

1: What I would like to know is. How many safety recalls have been issued on these cars?
2: If they have all been completed on the car, will the car be ok due to the problems being rectified under recall?
3: Do the recalls cost me anything?
4: Will the recalls still be done to my car if I buy it second hand and they haven't been done yet?
5: If they haven't been done yet, do you think I can use that as a bargaining tool to get the price down.
6: How do the suspension and drive line components hold up knowing that worst case I buy a car that is 10years old and has done some lightish 4x4ing over the years?

If the 3.0TD turns to be a dud buy, can someone convert my thinkings to a 3.5ltr on gas, or a 3.2ltr on gas.
1: How do they perform in comparision to the 3.0TD.
2: How long will they go for age/klm wise?
3: What sort of range/mileage will I get?
4: Are there any issues with the 3.5ltr on gas or petrol and the 3.2ltr on gas or petrol?

If anyone can think of any other info that may be a help to me I would greatly appreciate it.

To those that reply, thank you.

I wouldn't buy a 3.0TD Jackaroo with your money!

1. Don't know
2. No it will still break down on you
3. No - Free
4. Yes -recalls are regulated by the government
5. Nope
6. Depends on the previous usage of the vehicle at 10 years of age if they haven't been replaced they are due.

1. More power more torque and don't break down (as often)
2. Should het 250,000 to 300,000 if looked after really well
3. www.redbook.com.au fuel economy and tank capacity listed
4. Can't help on that one

Any other info ... Sure don't buy a 3.0TD Jackaroo!

Well I have a 1998 Jack 3.0DTi and it has just clocked over 204K. It is a narrow body Jack whereas the 2000-2003 ones are wide body (about 12 inches or so wider). Apart from replacing the injectors (free) and the water pump at 180k it has been brilliant. It goes shit out of a shotgun on snow, especially sand (makes discos and hummers look real sad), mud, rocky stuff and blows the door handles off most 2WDs at the lights. I got the Jack 2nd hand at 160k on the clock for $17k and I love it.

Hey thanks for the reply. That makes me more confident.

I am looking at what seems to be a 'no frills' model with low klms (the dealer won't get back to me to tell me how low). And I think I can go even lower than that as they say its immaculate, but it has some sill damage and a ding in the door, interior is also marked.

I would assume if I get it, that if the injectors havn't been done, to get it booked in ASAP and get it sorted?
