GQ gearbox in 80 series

Post by killalux »

hey all,
Is anyone running a GQ gearbox in an 80 series? can it be done with the stock diff, with the tailshaft on an angle.

My reason for doing this is to be able to run a decent adapter kit to an LS engine, strength, part time transfer, cheap and have a decent handbrake.

Would like to avoid changing to a patrol rear diff

what do you mean by a 'decent' LS adapter??? there are soooooo many adapters for toyota stuff its not funny, and then there are just as many for ANY g/box to toyota tcases. Nissan adapter availability is so limited its silly to even comprehend it.
damn steve just spend some time on the advance adapters site and keep your credit card lubricated

as far as i was aware marks were the only company that had the LS1 to cruiser manual box, and they use a add on adapter, with spacer shafts and shit. which i have heard can fail.
Dellows make a replacement bellhousing for the GQ box which seems to be far better.
I will check out the advance adapters site.

As for strength how do the 75 or 60 series boxes go? looking about 500HP flywheel. The 80 series boxes with part time t-case seem to be rare as

just convert a awd t/case to part time.

The 80 boxes hold up nicely and 500hp wont scare them with good oil, or the t/case. Mcloed make a workhorse range clutch and pressure plate which will also work well with 500 fw hp.

But running the tailshaft on an angle wont worry it, it already runs downhill to the diff on an angle ;)

or for the price of adapters, and the GQ crap you could run a manual found behind the LS2, (nh4500 or something? i dunno chev stuff), and an atlas wihich will be stronger again, and much better gearing options

I have that in my current truck and it shits me. Prob is when going throug sand/mud in 2wd with back wheels spinning, its to hard to just pull it into 4wd without stopping.

I am going to look into running a 79 series turbo diesel box i think.

why dont you just use a transfer out of a fzj75 as they are factory part time and the gear box will cop the punishment I have run a turbo 4.5ltr in a ute with the same setup and have no drama.
if it aint forced it wont go

fzj75 runs 80 series part time setup. the hd79 is also a 80 series box with some mods like a switch on first gear to tell the computer to back off full power, any part time case will have thesame issue selecting 4wd on power, as the rear shaft is spinning twice the front ones speed. I do understand the gq would allow a better brake, but the old question stands.... "Y" is a bent letter that cant be straightened....
