Hi, I have recently picked up a 79' BJ40 as my offroad rig (don't want to ding up the lux ). Among many other things which have now been rectified, i've found i cannot select gears with the transfer. Gearbox and clutch are working fine now (clutch plate was frozen from sitting). The transfer stick moves it just won't slide into a gear. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, as i have no idea.
Cheers, Andy.
On the transfer case where the 4wd selector shaft is (the one at the front of the box. Hi/Low is a lever on the top of the box), there should be a bolt which has a spring behind it. This spring holds a ball against the selector shaft inside the case and stops the shaft from vibrating or sliding in or out by itself. Sometimes it can jam. If that doesnt fix it, you might need to pull the case apart to find the problem. You might want to look for general corrosion on the shaft also.
