Glowplug Light 12HT

Post by Toy12HT »

My glow plug light does not come on when the ignition switch is turned on. I've checked the globe and its fine, so are the fuses. I've been waiting for 15sec before I turn the engine on and it seems to start fine but the light should come on. Any ideas where I should be looking to track down the fault? Beyond looking for a short?

Just turn the key and start it, don't give it time to glow, if it starts the same, theres something wrong with the glowplug relay or wiring.

Switch the car to on and multimeter the glowplug power rail, don't know the voltage and/or time limit on the glow relay, you might have to get someone else to turn the key to on, if its getting voltage its just the bulb wire.

If theres no power, check the glow plug relay wiring, bridge a wire from the battery to the switch wire on the relay, there will be 2 big wires, and a smaller switch wire, thats the wire that you want to power, if it clicks the switch wire is your problem, possibly a earth might be in the loom or it might earth through the housing.

My 3l wil start perfectly without glowing the plugs at all, either or you won't need to glow it for 15 seconds as the relay will turn the plugs off automatically before that.

Found this comment don't know about the 12ht but the same will still apply
The 12H-T doesn't have glow plugs, it's more like a chamber that pre heats the fuel.

A 12ht engine is direct injection and doesnt have glow plugs mate.

No need to wait, just fire him up.

Cheers.

Im not quite sure unless you have a cruiser that has had a 12ht fitted to it after factory. Im pretty certain the later models with the 12ht did away with the light but again im not 100%, either way its not needed..

Could be the same cluster as different models, 1hz etc, some hilux clusters are the same they have lights that never work for use with different motors, options etc.

Yes i realised that this morning after doing a bit more reading.

So then the glow light has never worked.

Just seems strange that the company would put a loom and a light in which is obsolete for the glow plug! The truck has the original engine as well which makes it even more strange.

It is true that the 12HT is direct injection and does not require as much assistance to start as an indirect injection engine.

No, the 12HT does not have glow plugs but it still has a pre heating system. This system is located just above the inlet plenum and looks sort of like the grill out of your oven.

You might not be seeing the light come on, because the pre heating system only activates when your water temperature is very low. The system will only activate when your engines water temperature gets down to 2 degrees celcius. Even then, it will only be on for 2 seconds.

Here is a picture of the intake pre heating system from my 12HT.

In this one, you can see how it is sandwiched between the intake shutter assembly and the inlet plenum.

It's possible the cluster isn't the original. The 60's fuel guage and temp guages had an earthing problem that would cause them to spike prompting a replacement.
If it's the original cluster than it will have a turbo warning and boost light.
