Hi Mal, yeah it was good to meet ya and as you said put a name to the face, pity we didn't have time to chat.
We were really dissappointed to go out early as we really just wanted to finish the modified section (no Pajero has ever done it in the comps current format). Our recovery was just a horror story plus holding you blokes up.
The club puts a hell of a lot of time and work into staging this event and they tried to make this years the most challenging for the modified vehicles (from what I heard they succeeded).
Cheers, Frank.

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
"National Lampoons Pajero Challenge" that is actully an accurate description of our weekend turps.
Arriving at the starting point on Saturday morning a strange knocking noise was comig from the front so we found a spot to park and realised that the wheel nuts on the front drivers wheel were loose and that all the studs were rooted, so half an hour before the start we have the front all stripped down and are replacing the wheel studs with some that thankfully were in the tool box.
While Andrew is doing this l get the rest of the car ready, unload the swags, fix up my maps and folders, get the food and drinks all sorted, in an attempt to break up the bag of ice i end up destroying the esky lid, o well l needed a new esky.
So off we go and are doing well, get through stage 1 and check in to the 1/4 point go to move the car, whats that weird noise and smoke coming from under the bonnet, the water pump has ceized , we the engine over a few times and after a few attempts it starts turning. Now we are a little worried, so we are given the all clear and are sent off for section 2, get around the corner and you guessed it seized, again we try cranking it over and it starts turning so we head off with our ears primed for the problem sound to arise again, it didnt thankfully.
All going well now making progress and get to a nice hill where we pull up 1 car behind Frank, Frank looks a little worried as we sit there watching a rangie strugling for traction while attempting the climb, the Rangie comes to a halt and the winch comes out, half an hour later they are up and its Franks turn, with shouts of encouragement Frank takes off but doesnt progress further than the Rangie Frank has done damage, but with help gets to the top, when our turn come we have been sitting at the base of the hill for 1 1/2 hours ( dont feel guilty Frank, its all part of competing ), we get to the top and continue on our way for the remainder of the second stage, pulling into the 1/2 way point we realise we have a flat so we pump it up and do the special stage, which was a small motorkhana event with a boghole and some deep ruts, good fun but end up with both front tyres leaking air from mud in the beads, put some air in and off we go for section 3.
Section 3 covered some good fun tracks lots of steep climbes and descents, first gear low range stuff, lots af waiting around for people to finish these sections and get the go, stage 3 also included a mini winch challenge which was good fun and helped wake people up as by now it was early morning. Aparently we did a good time here but others were still to go through.
Arrive at 3/4 point and have a cup of tea and some soup on our half hour compulsory break, plot all of section 4 on the maps and head off. When at the base of rocky track we realise that we have another flat and no inflated spare so off comes the tyre and we give the bead a clean up and reseat the tyre, off again. Do rocky and vic range and some other goodies. day light starting to appear in the sky, we get onto some great greasy sloshy downhill tracks which are new to us, we will be returning to these for a future play, getting thrown around a bit here, starting to feel ill through this section,we complete the rest of the stage and arive back at camp, by now its 9.30am, why do we do this to ourselves, still feeling crap, Andrew repacks the car and we take off for home, stop and hurl my guts out 1/2 an hour into the trip, get into healsville to refuel and realise one of the swags has disapeared from the back or the ute
So l am home now and recovering from a physically and mentally demanding comp and am looking forward to doing it all again real soon, yes we are gluttons for punishment.
As for finishing place l reckon Juzza will be up ther in the top 5, us between 10 and 15 hopefully, will find out on the 15th.
O yea and a big thanks to the Pajero club for running and organising such a great weekend.

Good report Joe but i'm pretty sure we are not going to be in top 20 let alone top 5.
Was a great weekend but i'm still tired, don't know how you guys drove straight back to NSW Mal.
After a peaceful nights sleep (for some) and a big breakfast at Marysville
we headed to the start and while team Drafty were fixing their truck we organised our highly disorganised pos. Briefing and start and we were away. Confusion reigns at the start of these events and this one was no different with tuff-looking rigs heading in all directions. Stage 1 turned out to be a sprint stage when 1/2 way through the route notes we discovered we wouldn't finish before the stage closed. So by the shortest way and the highest speeds we got to 1/4 way with minutes to spare. Stage 2 and we were breathing dust again, got to Frank's hill and up and over, couple more nasty hills with a bit of bouncing and into the navrun type exercise.
Finished that, getting held up by rangies and we get told to cut and run to the stage finish again, not happy 'cause i think we could have finished in time. As it turns out we get back first to half-way and some blokes we weren't far behind get in with a few minutes to spare without missing all the navpoints and questions.
So hook into the motorkhana at half way and pick the wrong gear in the boghole, reverse, nail it, fill car with black shit due to leaving window down which gets lol from officials, then finish in 1 min 5 sec or so.
Go and have something to eat and wait till we can start 3rd stage.
Start stage three at 10pm and into some harder stuff, nasty downhill rutted tracks and rutted boggy ones, over to Toolangi area and a few good tracks there, winch exercise, a few more moments of being lost and a few questions missed and into the final stage.
Stage 4, start it about 3am? and along bitumen to the quarry then Rocky,Vic range, Downies, Blowhole etc. Back towards Siberia gap, couple more nice fast tracks in the cool morning air and back in to finish about 8am. Breakfast, wait for Team Drafty to get in about 9:30 and head home for a sleep
Challenge was harder this year and just as tricky in the nav stuff as usual.
Wasn't too happy about the length of the 1st stage but overall still had a great time. My tip for the top 5 are mostly all the big names, Atoc, Smiths, Mooney and Vanderhorst, Hobbsy etc, These guys are always hard to compete against with the experience and well set-up trucks.

Good stuff guys
I dunno bloody Rangies and Poojabbers holding evryone up
Actually we found ourselves behind Mike Smith early in stage 2 when we got to a T intersection my navvy says left as Smithy goes right
I stop and ask if he is sure and he promises me he'd bet his balls it's a lefty, I say but Mike Smith went right, surely he couldn't get it wrong.
I go left get about a km down the gravel road and then I hear a V8 screaming in the distance and getting closer very quickly sure enough it's a blue Rangie. I let him pass and my navvy says see I really value my knackers.

As a navigator you must always trust your own judgement and follow your own istinct, no matter how good you are we all make mistakes, even the top guys.
By the way if you ever go away with juzza get your own room or camp far far away, the bastard kept us awake all night with his snoring.

Thanks for the feedback so far on the Pajero Challenge.
Looks like we did succeed in making it more challenging this year. I had high hopes that a Paj would at least finish the hardest course ever designed for the Pajero Challenge. I was also surprised that Patrols were breaking down and the Rangies were still going.
Results will be posted on the Pajero Club Website after the presentation night in Mid March. It's difficult to gauge who the winner is until then. Last year it was very hard to separate the competitors because most were getting correct answers. This year was a quantum leap in difficulty so the scores will be more spread out. Even the experienced teams made many mistakes. Those who actually looked at the points allocation and concentrated on getting the big points will do well. The points after the cut & run were less than the points early in the section, so if you cut & run you didn't loose that much and you would have had more time to do the next section.
If I can find someone to take over as Track coordinator next year, I will be competing with you cause the prizes are getting better and better. Watch out for a dual cab GU soon.
Good luck with the result....
cheers,
Alberto.

Drafty I reckon you guys have done this before.
