gday guys,
sorry if someones covered this topic but i cant find it any where but can someone point me in the right direction of someone whos done the injected 5.0 conversion in a GQ and let me no there experiances or what they have heard.

I personally know 2 guys who have done the 5L conversions, one in a GQ and one in an 80 series, and both are pretty disapointed. Why?
in order to get the torque out of the engines they need to rev them about 3000rpm, now even in low range thats too fast, yes its nice to do 4 wheel wheelspins but thats about all the 5L is good for, i can get more places with my TD42 N/A at a confortable and traction keeping speed than the 5L GQ and 80 series can, i don't need to rev the guts out of it, can't wait to turbo it.

You need the correct cam in order for low engine torque in the 5.0l, Dave Goss from Gossies Dyno Tuning at Morriset found a cam almost by mistake that gives max torque at 1500 odd all the way through to 4-5grand.
Also shaved 90thou off the heads to achieve this and its been in his dyna 4wd for 13 odd years without troubles!
My 5.0l will be getting this cam and head work after tax when i have some money to throw at it
There's lots of hidden costs with everything, gen 3 will be more expensive than a 5.0l conversion.
Heads wil need $$ spent if running on gas in both engines, 5.0l iron
heads wont melt into a pile of metal after the'v been hot either
I know a guy who went from a 5.0l to a 355 stroker(with mods) in the same truck and it hauled over a gen3(with mods)
But in the end it comes down to money...and what you get talked into!
I wished i had gone the 355 stroker route with cam and inlet mods with gas injection but time wasnt on my side and had to be done quickly...
I live with that choice though and i do still enjoy driving it!
Work out your budget then go from there, and if it's 8 grand allow for 11-12k cos costs will pop up unexpectably

Cost should be the last consideration when doing a conversion, they are all alot of work, and if you cant afford what you want, be patient and save longer, but dont choose what you can afford now, if its not what you want, or you will spend the whole time you drive it wishing you did what you wanted!

thanks alot guys i was thinking the same thing with the 5.0 having cast heads gotta be a good thing i plan on getting the standard motor in and doing engine work down the track just so i no what it goes like and work up from there as to how i want it to proform. Money isn't really a problem with it but my opinion on the 5.7 is that there cost for the conversion is way to much as iv played with alot of 5.0s in my time and you can really get them going well enough for what i want to do. If I did it again I would go a LS2 every day of the week. 400hp ( bolt some l76 heads on with a slightly bigger cam and you will have 500hp) out of the crate, you cant can't go wrong. And with all wiring adapters and PCM tuners, it makes it a whole lot easer these days. You will still need to part with 10k I would think, if you do it your self.
Why just do a conversion (that seems to have MORE than a few detractors), when you seem stuck to badget?
ANYTHING is going to going to have more power than an RB30, and less hassles than an RB30 turbo.
Why not just get a TB42/42E/45E or TB48E? Nissan stock, less conversion dramas!!

yeah i looked into doing the 4.2 conversion but converting it from a petrol i really need a whole doner car to swap all the gear over and from experiance all my mates have had to turbo there 4.2s for extra power and realisticly i should sell me truck and buy one with a 4.2 in it but iv got mine set up how i want it just needs a bit more power. i can see where your coming from but keeping in mind im not using it for 4wd comps or anything providing i can push 37s at 110k an hour with out to much trouble and have bit of talk when i need it ill be happy

A carbed TB42 would be an easy swap, no electonics etc. Cheap to buy (and/or rebuild too!!). If you were thinking about a V8 swap, a TB45E would be the same amount of hassle (electronics etc), but you could get nearly ALL the bits from wreckers for cheaper than the bits you'd need to buy from specialist mobs.
Don't forget gearing too, put 4.6's (instead of the std 4.3's) for a bit more go. ANd for offroad, lockers and t/case gears. Better way to spend $$ than V8 swap.
