Over heating hilux
Hey guys
I just got back from the first decent trip (from Wagga to rainbow
beach in qld in 3 weeks bout 2200ks there and back) me and my
91 hilux (3L engine) have done since the Turbo was fitted about a
month ago
The problem is she over heats when doing highway speeds
(about 95 was the highest it'd go without getting hot) especially
going up hills
the radiator looks pretty well shagged out so I'm thinking its that
but I'm no expert just after everyone's thoughts

I have a 2lt and it did the same thing
Flush the Radiator
put organic coolent (plug for Austrailian organic coolent company
High flow colder Thermostate
Change temp sensor (just got wrong readings from mine)

my turbo is oil cooled and coolant cooled. i got a alloy radiator 50mm thick and 50mm taller, new water pump and colder thermo and mine wanted to overheat..we worked out the turbo was heating up the coolant to much.. but its just on the highway aswell. has your turbo got coolant going through it?

My 2.8 did the same thing when i turboed it years ago.I fixed it with a bigger custom built radiator ,removed the driving lights from in front of the radiator, put a gu bonnet scoop above the turbo and a after market temp gauge.I did one at a time and they all made a difference.I can tow my large boat in the build up up here and it has never over heated.
Have a look at the clutch fan the grease in them looses its viscosity and the viscus coupling on the fan does not lock up properly this will cause it to over heat on the free way and mainly up hills common problem in Toyota.
You can buy the grease from Toyota very cheep fix.
To check if it is not working I hold the fan on the back side with my fingers and get some one the start the car if there is no load on the fan with the engine running this is your problem you can even spin the fan the opposite way to the engine with the engine running it most cases.
Had this happen to a mates 2.8 while out camping we filled it with wheel bearing grease is still like to this day 3 years later.
Count your fingers when you have finished

Was the fuel tuning a home job when it was turboed? if so have you checked your exhaust temps? if they are too high - i.e overfueling this will create alot more heat and kill your turbo and or engine regardless of a new radiator.
if your not sure get it dynoed by a shop with a egt /pyro guage or get one yourself.
interesting thing on the same topic. i also have a 3L hilux turboed.
My old rad was getting tired and the car would get a little hotter than it used to on the hwy, so before it became a problem i got a new ebay rad and put it in...
holy shite it was a piece of crap, didnt quite fit properly, 1 bolt didnt line up, and i could no longer drive flat stick on the hwy or tow above 70kph.
The radiator mob were good about it, he cant understand why it was no good, thinks it may have been blocked internally, but any way ended up recoring my origional radiator with an aussie 4 core unit to be 100% sure it would be effective.
The imported POS i was origionally sent even split on me in the vic high country last week... made for a fun trip. I will never buy an import rad again. i will always pay more for an aussie recore.
