werd noise sounds bad help!
got this noise its getting progressively louder i had this bloke i know take it 4 a drive he thought it was front wheel bearings but om closer inspection he thinks it might be diff. i am just a chippy i have no idea any help would be great.
What sought of noise, when does it make the noise eg, when accel, decel, all the time, when the car is moving, certain gears etc etc etc.
Coming from the front?, remove the front shaft and if it stops its the diff.

uni joint? I fried a wheelbearing a week ago, that badly that it ended up spinning the bearing race and warping the hub and the noise as it happened was most noticable at higher speeds, it was a horrible grinding sound with plenty of squeeling. Yesterday my front uni started to let go, was making a slight squeek when coasting but when taking off/ under load it was a clunky/ grating sound that went quiet when coasting. The uni joint felt ine when wiggleing the shaft but when removed from the car the truth came out.
Jabber gone. Now have 98 nissan terrano and a 94 4.2ldiesel rv troopy on 33s slowly getting the fancy bits. How the hell do I change my user name?
sorry, didnt read the first post prperly, my experience was with the rear tailshaft and wheelbearing. But the symptoms would be the same in constant 4x4 anyway.

G'day Mick80,
Watch out for umm dogey mechanics they will tell the unaware what ever to get more money out of you... It;s happened to me..On a trip around Victoria. a mechanic told me after having work done to the front end" Are you aware your transfer-case is in need of a rebuild?"... as I had done this about 4 years earlier I couldn't understand why. so he took me for a drive in my 40 to show me what he meant. and sure enough i heard a banging sound coming from it. or so i thought . I was a bit worried as the last rebuild cost me a lot of money. I decided to get a couple of mates together and explained what had happened and what the mechanic had said.. One of them knew this mechanic as he had also been caught out... the mechanics favorite trick was to jack the car up using a bottle jack under the bash plate thus squashing it up enough that when i applied power the torque made the uni com in contact with the plate thus the banging sound... the dodgeys are still out there so watch out...

Oh yeah I forgot to say...... there was nothing wrong with the transfer-case. it was in perfect working order.. albeit in need of it's regular oil change...
Needless to say... always get a second opinion when thing don't sound right
