Hi Guys,
I posted here a few weeks ago about most capable fourby for under 9k. Seems the GQ got the nod over most.
Now ive decided to part with the 2nd car (03 Ford XR6 Turbo) and upgrade to a GU 1999-2001 model as the sale value of the Ford should match the buy value of the Nissan.
Can please get some advise on what to look out for in the 2.8L TD ? any other things i should know ?

Don't waste your time on a 3lt grenade

If you are goin to run decent rubber of tow, you will find the 2.8 underpowered.
If you hunt around you will find a good 4.2, but it will take some finding.
I have recently brought a td4.2t GU, I searched all over the eastern states and only looked at a handful. I was lucky and got a one owner with low kays ,bogstock appart from bullbar and tow bar. It has full service history with only 100,000 km's and I only paid $20,000. So if your not in a hurry they are out there, just few and far between.

but a mate had a 2.8 put the chip in it & a 3" exhurst and it went pretty good & had orsom economy

my xr6 turbo does 15L/100kms .. its just way too much.
I have 33's, big bullbar, 3inch lift, winch, snorkel and with a full tank and me it weighs 2800kilos. So the above figures are pretty good as far as fuel consumption goes.

4.2 shouldn't use much more, to give an example went up to Burrum heads for a hol with the GF and her parents, her old man towed the boat with his patrol (4.2TD) boat had eskies full of drinks, luggage and all the fishing gear in it and the back of the patrol had 2 fridges full of food and 4 people, I took m hilux (2.4TD) with the crab pots, tv, BBQ and some other gear. We both sat on 95-100km/h and teh Patrol used about $4 more fuel than the hilux.

Don't get the 2.8 or 3 L you will regret it eventually as have so many before . The ones that say "I've got one and never had a problem there good" are secretly awake at night praying it will hold out until they can afford to move on . If you can't find a 4.2d in a GU for the money maybe there's a pristine GQ lurking in the shadows turbo could be fitted and still have money for the fun stuff.

Nothing wrong with either go whichever you get for the right price or which you would really prefer to drive over the other. I had an auto 4.8 and it was a monster did everything I asked and downhills were not that big a deal. Beach was great and driving rocks with your head out the window guiding and left foot pedaling is soo much easier than an independant spotter .OzTeXs wrote:so should manual be a must .. i used to own a XJ cherokee and the auto offroad was awesome, although the 4.0l straight six did help
Bear in mind you cannot get an auto 4.2 and I can't remember if you cna get an auto 2.8. The auto apparently made the 3.0 a nicer truck to drive and may do the same to a 2.8 for the same reasons, not sure never had a 2.8 but don't personally like them.
Like stated make sure you get a good long drive of a 2.8 in case you don't like it and don't spend heaps after trying to make it like a 4.2. Mind you they are pretty asmatic in standard trim also.
I think the petrol GU's on gas are a fine truck for the money but that example looks a little steep probably cause of it's mods. I've seen similar condition TI GU's selling for that money, some already on gas and that would be my pick if I were to go petrol. A bit of luxury to compare to your XR6.

stick with the nissan, much more capable in stock form, the 4.5l petrols are heavy on fuel i have a auto it gets 5km/L, which is the same as my gq with a 5.7l v8 but having said that i paid $16000 for a ti with arb bullbar, warn winch, dual batteries, etc, where any 4.2d where about $25000. the 4.2 use very little fuel, i would sau it would be about the same as the 2.8, the 4.2 dont have to work any where near as harder as the smaller motors
if you think the nissan 4.2td is hard to find for a good price, then the cruisers will seem even harder to find for a good price, the 80 diesels in nice trim are up there for their age.OzTeXs wrote:nah not interested in the beach at all.
