Warn high mount winch brake? - where to find/fix

Post by motoking »

Hey all i was using winch the other day to try and un roll my tractor when the brake popped off the side of it when i went to re start it under load. a heap of little steel ball bearings and a couple peices of clutch or brake like material fell out of the bottom of it.

i rung arb to see if i could get the parts but they only sell the whole thing for about $620. does anyone know of a cheaper way of fixing it (excludding methods involving duct tape, zippy ties, hitting it with a hammer or filling it full of weld?) :P or getting parts from some where else. Any help much appreciated

Cheers Allan

Hey thanks for that guys. I pulled the brake appart today and the casings and stuff seem to be in pretty good Nick so that sounds heaps more reasonable to rebuild I'll give them a call tomorrow and see how I go :-)

Having the brakeshaft tapped and an endcap fitted would stop this happening again.
Rip it apart and post the shaft down to Malcolm Leslie in Melbourne ;)

If you've put it under so much load it's popped the circlip off, you may want to look at upgrading by means off drilling and tapping the end of the brake shaft in order to securely bolt the brake mechanism on.

I'm sure Dale from 2dextreme or someone involved with comp stuff in QLD could help..

hey all i called opposite lock in nerang and talked to tony and he said he could get me a kit for about $180 which i thought was pretty resonable although it has obiously gone up a bit. He then rung me back about 5 min later and said that he still thought that was to expensive and i should try smithi engineering, so i gave that ago and i got the upgraded brakes and ball bearings for about $90 including postage. so i reccomend opposite lock for there honsty ( he could of easily just let me get the product from him) and to smithi engineering for doing it heaps cheaper.(if he ever emails me the details :P ) It deffiently helps when i gotta fix the tractor :P

i broke the whinch by stop starting trying to flip it back over which i think is more then i would ever ususaly pull, particularly without a snatch block, if it breaks agian then i will deffinently get it machiened with a bolt instead, thanks heaps for all of your help
